Struggling to see how this is better than a new consumer Crucial 2tb or a SAS 12g 1.6tb drive that go for similar prices. Are there specs on this that I'm missing?

Yes. published specs are SM863 (MLC) - 12.320 PBW and PM836 (TLC) - 2.8PBW - a collected review.

for the $16 original difference (actually less for my OBO) I'll take the additional 9+ PBW not that I'm likely to ever hit that with my use case.
you may have gotten the last laugh

Now that the STH (R) effect is in full swing, it's now slightly down to $229 from $259 (and before STH at $185)

Offers are open but doesn't seem willing

Thank you. I picked up a SM863 from the OP's post. I offered $219 and was accepted. Should be a perfect boot drive for my non-M.2, non-PCie bootable Dell T3610 workstation.
