I had been running a HP Thin Client T630 for 6 months as a server for 6 months and as I was browsing for a faster SSD for it during Amazon's Prime Day, it's stock ssd died. The same afternoon! Long story short - it's in a remote location to me so I learned my lesson of always running in a VM instead of bare metal so I can take full snapshots.

The machine has two SATA m.2 slots. When browsing I did notice that m.2 SATA drives are much more expensive than their 2.5" or m.2 NVMe counterparts. Supply and demand I guess. I managed to get a MX500 at a good price but it still begs the question - what is the future of machines that only accept m.2 SATA drives if these drives won't be produced as cheaply or for as long as 2.5" SATA or m.2 NVMe?

I would be very happy to rely on some m.2->SATA cable and to just dangle a 2.5" ssd somewhere on the chasis. Are there such adapters? Are they reliable?

Dark :D
I don't think these systems can be "futureproofed". M.2 sata is for ssds only and modern ssd/nand are bottlenecked by the (s)ata protocol.

how about industrial m.2 sata ssd like innodisk (mlc and wide temperature ) , maybe it more reliable 。
about price I got used 64G innodisk 3me4 10$ each, which power on time less than 100 hours.
btw the t630 and my t640 run hot ,my ssd in t640 got 64C or higher in summer

That's interesting. I didn't know about these. They seem hard to find in the UK and show up only as msata in ebay.

I am back to my immortal T610 until I get physical access to replace the ssd :) Is the T640 worth it? They are still quite expensive

Just get some MX500 M.2's and call it a day.

Or better yet, look out for used OEM drives like the Samsung PM881.
