I would have expected much lower frequencies on an ES. and that's AVX512?
normaly you are right. but cascade lake is a refresh, not a new platform like skylake was.
AVX512 frq. will be much lower, there is bench in CPU-Z which uses AVX512 code, Cinebench R20 uses only AVX2.

Now can someone ELI5 what AVX-512 is and what it improves?
With the AVX-512, due to the double register width of 512-bit, one opcode can do eight additions with double precision or 16 additions with single precision per clock. programs written with avx512 code is faster and shorter, but (today) not very portable to other platforms/processors.

Does anyone know whether Cascade Lake SP Xeons are soldered or use TIM? I'm considering to buy QS and tune them with liquid metal in case they use TIM

QDF: QS??
specs looking similar to the QPKD(A0), but with better stepping B1.
I'm told it is a early 1st run/pre-production 8260L. That's why it shows B1/L1/R1 as revisions, as QS supposedly only went to B1.
All cores speed is 3.1ghz, all cores AVX 2.0 is 2.6ghz, all cores AVX-512 is 2.3ghz
2 cores speed is 3.9ghz, 2 cores is AVX 2.0 is 3.7ghz, 2 cores AVX-512 is 3.7ghz.
Unfortunately they seem to default to all-cores AVX-512 @2.3ghz whenever AVX is in use.
what is your CinebenchR20 score ?
A very disappointing dual CPU non-Hyper-Threaded (48 core) 9260, and Hyper-Threaded (96 core) 15055.
I've never run tests as a single CPU.

B1 is latest available stepping Cascade Lake XCC DIE, same than Xeon W-32xx have. L1 and R1 is the same but for other DIE sizes(HCC/LCC)

found it.
QRG4 Plat 8260(B1) ES 24C 2.30Ghz 165W
note there are other 8260:
QPK5 Plat 8260(A0) QS 24C 2.30Ghz 165W DDR4-2933
QRB0 Plat 8260(B0) QS 24C 2.30Ghz 165W DDR4-2933

as QS supposedly only went to B1.
the QS will have the same stepping than the matching production unit.
HWinfo shows B1/L1/R1 if the DIE size is not reported.
