what's the impact if the boot sector size can't be changed?
If they're locked at 520, most controllers and OS's don't know what to do with them. So outside of shoving them into an actual NetApp array, the use is pretty limited unless you can get them reformatted as 512. And given the firmware locking that happens on SANs, I would not expect them to work in another vendor's SAN.

well, I guess I'll find out if anyone else posts their findings (before I get mine). Otherwise, there might be a couple more available in about a week :)

I also found this eBay listing (yeah, the deal looks crazy good.. but when you add it to cart, it updates to a much worse deal unfortunately) where a review mentions being able to flash Netapp drives to 512 bytes, but had to use sas2ircu and megaraid.

I’ve got 4 drives on the way, hoping someone will post a guide on reformatting

Received drive today - reformatted 520>512 using sg_format under linux (UnRaid/Slackware).

"sg_format -v --format --size=512 /dev/sdv"

Also redid using "--six" flag for good measure. Probably not necessary.

"sg_format -v --format --size=512 --six /dev/sdv"

Each pass took about 30min. SAS3 hba/expander may be quicker, was using SAS2 backplane.

One down, eleven to go ;)

This morning , another seller has 2 PM1643 SSD $225 each SSD listed. I purchased both SSD.

Tracking number received , USPS have the package, arriving here on Fri.

Now, the same seller is listing $515 each SSD ,
may be the seller realized the SSD could be formatted to 512 sector.

I was watching that listing and when it sold out I was wondering if someone from here grabbed them. That was an even better deal than this!

So these would work in a standard Supermicro SAS2 backplane from a SC846?
I have not much experiece with tested that, but i dont see why it should not work. Does yours have a expander? Then maybe it could have issues, but it shouldnt.

I have two NetApp shelves with 900G 10k drives that I had to reformat; I used PowerShell to run multiple instances of sg3_format. It wasn't a bandwidth issue for the format, just sector count. Might be different for SSDs, but I did 47 drives in parallel and it took as long as the first test drive did.

I'm sure you can do similar in Bash to launch parallel instances of the format utility with a for each loop and substitute the loop counter into the device path.
