Does anyone know if there are any ES LGA 3647 chips that can run memory at 2933mhz? I assumed people advertising QQ8Q processors on eBay as 6240 means they would run at 2933mhz. But the seller says that no ES processors run at 2933mhz. Is he just trying to get me to purchase his lower speed stuff? I assumed that them advertising it as an ES/QS of a 62xx or 82xx processor would mean max memory speed would be the same as retail.

QS is a engineering sample too, but not all ES are QS.
QS have a valid brand string, NOT "0000@"
QQ8Q is not a QS, only ??2666Mt?? but with hexachannel the difference to 2933 is small in practical performance.
(edit: QQ8Q is verified to run memory at 2933Mt on a HP Workstation)
QPKD(8260M A0 QS) is a ES, and runs memory at 2933Mt.

Are there any ES (that are not QS) that can run at 2933?

Hi,

As far as I know, the 6240 QQ8Q ES runs at 2933MHz. At least the ones I had.

The same goes for almost all the other Cascade Lake-SP ES2 chips.

From all the ones that passed through my hands, only the QQZ1 was running at 2666MHz max.

Cheers

EDIT: Btw, RolloZ170 is right about the performance gain, which in my very limited testing was non-existant. Maybe that is due to a higher latency on the 2933MHz memory modules. What does have a measurable performance gain is if the memory is running in a six channel or not.

Amazing info, I had a feeling this seller was just making that up/didn't have the mobo/memory to try it.

Any chance you tested a QQ8M? Some eBay sellers listing it as a 5218 which wouldn't support 2933 but one as a 6230 which retail would run at 2933.

Unfortunately no, I didn't have that one. I also have to add that I mostly have had high-end Gold and Platinum ES chips, so I really don't know about low-value gold, silver, and bronze ES CPUs. I'd guess that they run at the same speed as their OEM/retail equivalents.

Hi!

I have a new Intel Xeon Gold 6138 ES (QL1L) from aliexpress and a X11SPM-F motherboard. (downgraded bios to 2.1)
After i installed the old cpu, the network cards stopped working. All of the ports have constant led on even without cable connected.
BMC is works but only in dedicated port mode. When i switch to shared mode it no longer accessible on web interface and i must reset it to dedicated with ipmicfg command line. I also updated the bmc fw to the latest version.
Before this ES cpu the mobo worked fine with an retail 5218R and the latest bios.
I have modded the new latest 3.4 bios from supermicro site, i inserted the microcode so now the new 3.4 bios works on the old ES cpu but the network is still unusable. (but it is allow to overclock the ram to 2933, but i only tested it on 2666)
The bios displays "check bounds error" on boot.

Right now i use a 20 year old realtek pci card with pcie-pci adapter.
Is there any know bug with the ES xeons and intel x722 chipset network?

its not the ES. it is your modded BIOS. have you corrected the FIT table ? (if you don't know what it is don't ask here is not the place for BIOS mod discussions)

not a good idea, we have learned that a old bios do not work with latest BMC firmware.
how do you downgraded the BIOS ? IPMI or USB flash drive ?
only to be sure: the 1Gbit ports do NOT support 100/10Mbit, you have to have a 1Gbit Switch/Hub to connect with.

Im only inserted the missing microcodes with Aptio MMTool and updated the bios.
Im not corrected the FIT table, i will check that.
Thanks!

I only use the bmc (local network address web on mobile phone or another pc) to update/downgrade bios.
For the BMC firmware is use the firmware updater on supermicro site, that runs on windows.
i have 1Gb router and CAT6a SFTP cables (Mikrotik RB3011)
But the network was fine with 3.1 bios and 5218R cpu, but not with the unmodded stock 2.1 bios (and the modded 3.4 bios) + 6138 ES
The old bios was here: https://drunkencat.net/misc/SupermicroBIOS.html
Right now it is the newest modded bios and the newest bmc firmware installed.

ok you added the 50652 microcode and gets five(5) entrys in your mc list ? that will be the reason for your bounds error, there is no place for 5 mcodes, you have to remove/replace one. i don't think MMTool is the right Tool for modded Aptio 5 UEFI.
maybe you can get help here

Yes there is 5. I have modded a few motherboards before, mostly chinese x99 board with that tool. (but i always removing codes not adding)

So it is possible the microcode is overwrited some data on the x722 fw. Ok so i download the new bios, and remove all of the microcodes and i only add the skylake ES 50652.

you should better use old 2.0a BIOS and maybe downgrade the BMC firmware.
you are never sure your modded bios is ok if you can't test with a supported skylake-sp cpu.
