Hello Fohdeesha and fellow members, i recently bought an ICX6450-24 off fleabay. It basically came "wiped" and not ready to run. If I didn't do some internet searches, I'd have thought I bought a brick and would have requested a refund by now (seller has 30 days return). Who knows it may be DOA, but here is where your knowledge and expertise will help me get it running or save me in time to request a return. I have a USB-RJ45 console cable hooked to the Console and a passthrough cable from my laptop ethernet to the Management. In putty it's showing this:
Bootloader Version: 07.4.01T310 (Jun 29 2012 - 11:04:25)

BTW, the fleabay listing has this pic of the item and when I got it and powered on, these lights also lit. Seller had listing for another 6450-24 also with these same status lights lit.

Please help. Sorry about the long post and thank you for your time.

your ping is live , maybe your tfp server or firwall issue , and you env is wrong , you need put SPR08080e.bin and mnz10114.bin in tfpserver root dir , otherwise it can not download firmware and uboot.

Code:
ipaddr=192.168.1.75
serverip=192.168.1.79
netmask=255.255.255.0
gatewayip=192.168.1.1

image_name=ICX64R08030t.bin

ICX64XX-boot>> ping 192.168.1.79
ethPortNo = 0
Link Status Changed, Re-Negotiation Start
Using egiga0 device
host 192.168.1.79 is alive---->> your tftp server ip is alive
this is copy from @fohdeesha

Code:
#plug the management ethernet port into your network ,

#drop into the bootloader
#give the switch a temporary IP

setenv ipaddr 192.168.1.50
setenv netmask 255.255.255.0

#tell the switch the IP of your tftp server:
setenv serverip 192.168.1.51

#tell it the name of the OS firmware file:
setenv image_name  SPR08080e.bin

#tell it name of bootloaader file:
setenv uboot  mnz10114.bin

#flash the OS:
update_primary

#when that's done flash a new bootloader:
update_uboot

#when everything is done reboot the switch then follow the regular guide:
reset

Thank you for your quick reply. I did below and substituted the image and boot files for the 6450-24 as per fohdeesha's guide. Should I have used the 08080e software version?

I'm relatively new here, but have been reading STH for a long time and have been around on r/homelab for a long time too.

I just got myself an ICX 6610-48P and ICX 7150-C12P. I've licensed the 7150 no problem, but do I need a license file for the 6610 to get the 10G ports, or does it work on an honor basis when it's on the latest firmware? I'm sure I read that beyond a certain firmware version it was honor-based, but can't use the same command that I did on the 7150.

Hi all, I was about to pull the trigger on an ICX 6450 POE model, I'm currently limping along with a cheapo 8 port managed switch, and another 8 port POE switch both of which are full. My "future proof" (hopefully) requirements are 24 or more ports, 16 or more POE ports, at least two but preferably 4 10G sfp ports, and quiet enough to keep by my desk, although completely quiet is not necessary. Layer 3 routing would be nice, that way I don't have to ship all that traffic though a 1G link to the router. The problem is I read someone said the license unlocks don't work anymore, is that right? I know that means I'd lose 10G functionality on 2 of the 4 sfps, not sure what other issues I'd have. Are these still the "best" for an under $200 budget now?

P.S. is there a search in thread function? I couldn't find it.
Additional option to get POE capabilities - just use POE Midspan (like Microsemi PD-9006/9012/9024 - relative loud) or POE injectors (like Motorola High POE - silent) or in case of IP cameras - chinese POE injector with external power supply works just fine and totally silent.

Hi - my first (I ordered a few) ICX6450-48P showed up today. I am starting to play with it now. Just a question - out of the box, if I plug it into power, and plug a POE device into the switch, should the POE device power on? Not connect to the rest of the network, just power on?

My older cisco switches when buying used, i do a POE test for each port (typically plugged into the network).

Is it possible I need to log into the device to enable POE first?

Yeah you need to enable poe manually.... At least that's how it was for me

The ICX6xxx units support 8030u as the newest. If you try loading any of the ICX7xxx firmwares, you'll break something, assuming it will even let you.

What TFTP server are you using? If you have a firewall on the workstaiton, did you allow TFTP? Did you place the two bin files in the TFTP root folder? It won't be able to pull them from a ZIP.

Thanks, for your reply and thanks to @Freebsd1976 for pointing me in the right direction about tftp not working. I was using Jounin's TFTP on a windows 10 laptop. I guess I never quite got the firewall setting correct. Today i read about Winagents TFTP and how it's more "firewall friendly". I gave it a try. Still couldn't update. I suspect the firewall is still giving it crap, even though i straight turned it off. Newbie with homelab. I finally gave up and moved everything to an old Thinkpad with XP SP3, no firewall and not even wifi-ed to the network, just straight ethernet to Management port and the usb console cable. did setenv, then update_primary - BADABING BADABOOM!! I cried tears of joy - just kidding. the 08030t image i downloaded from fohdeesha's guide loaded right up, as well as the accompanying boot bin. Followed the guide to finish her up and how i'm getting ready to hook my nas to it via SFP+. Now i just need to pm fohdeesha for the license. it says this at boot:

PoD: No license present for port 1/2/2
PoD: No license present for port 1/2/4

I'm guessing that's the bottom two sfp ports

@Nikotine ,

Depends on how you hav the WRT router configured. If it's set to tag VLAN traffic also, then keep it tagged with no dual-mode. I suspect it is not VLAN aware, however. This is fine. You can either tag it on the switch and then use dual-mode on that port, but you'd be better off just assigning it as an untagged port.

Hi,

I had a question about POE Usage on the 6450-48P. I enabled POE on all ports though not likely to use all 48 ports for POE.

When the switch allocates power - 15.4 watts but uses 2.2 watts (1/1/5)

1. Does this take away from total POE total of 15.4 watts or 2.2 watts?
2. Does the switch pull actual power at 2.2 watts or 15.4 watts?

Thanks,
Rich

Thanks,
Rich

Allocated means reserved. Actual PoE consumption is the aggregate of the Consumed column.

So it will deduct the allocation from the total but it’s only consuming what’s listed.

Agreed, we have no way of knowing for sure. I remember reading your post about the PSU popping and letting out an audible groan.

For anyone going forward, my best rule of thumb is to match the replacement components as closely to the originals in terms of performance. I'm going off the assumption Brocade knew what they were doing when they built these, so any specs used on the original parts will be sufficient for the machine to function as intended.

The original fans in this system moved an airflow of around 25 CFM according to my research. You were rocking two Deltas with a max CFM of around 10 CFM; the Deltas I initially tried were 24 CFM, and then the Mechatronics I settled on are around 17 CFM.

Obviously no data to support, but my best guess would be the much higher airflow of the Mechatronics fans (plus having 3 instead of 2) would play a factor. Then again, you were monitoring your temps and they seemed fine, so it very well could've been a faulty cap, or maybe the temp sensors simply don't tell the whole story with this stuff.

I don't know - best advice to anyone on these boards once they get modding is understand the risks involved. And I hope we don't come to find these have crap PSUs longterm.
Hey guys sorry for being a noob, really appreciate your help with this.
i bought the fans from Digikey got them expressed shipped to Australia, they have just arrived however they dont have any connectors on them hahahha they have have three exposed wires on them.
what do i do with these to make them work in/with the switch?161963895_251368883355556_3380274297813549069_n.jpg

Hi,

Go to your nearest Jaycar and get a "3 Pin 0.1 Header with Crimp Pins - 2.54".
For the pin layout check your existing fans.
Hope that helps.

Just to jump in on this - I want to be sure you purchased the Sunon (or similar) fan for the ASIC as well - that's sort of the magic that makes this all work. You also need to have it when you crimp the rest of the fans since you need to wire it in to fan 3 (assuming you're doing all 3 fan headers).

i think the 7250-24p only has 2 fan headers total so i would only be able to have the 2 fans at the rear running, i only purchased the mechatronics fans that you specified in the previous posts
