Sg 1100 is a bit low on ram here you get 4g as well as not being locked to pfsense.

Regards S
The PCEngines APU2 platform is based on the GX412TC, which is a 6 year old APU (and around the same capabilities as the ones found in the HP t620 series). PCEngines only sell 3 AMD APU products, one based on the AMD/Natsemi Geode LX, one on the AMD T40, and one on the GX412TC.

The GX412TC is not that strong (it's hamstrung by the Puma architecture, the 6w TDP and the 1GHz clockspeed), the RAM is soldered (no upgradeability down the line), and I am not sure if you are really getting much value spending today's money on yesterday's tech like so. With repurposing thin clients what you are effectively doing is letting someone else pay for hardware amortization and picking it up when there's almost no residual value.

Besides, I can think of Celeron based industrial NUCs with multiple ports that would give you much more bang for the buck, so to speak.

Okay, so on part 2 - let's see if we can some cheap thrills with the t640.

First of all - questions about its performance. How well does it do in Passmark? Well, here's the numbers. And if you want to see the actual report, Here it is (I pulled the pair of 32GB SODIMMs for a pair of 4GB). The rankings weren't too bad for a 15w embedded Ryzen ZPU.

5A5A9D32-A2A5-40DC-8725-31638A5E7246.jpeg

The numbers are roughly in line with that of an HP14-DK1022WM laptop sold at Walmart for 300 USD...which makes sense since the overall specs are very similar. Oh wait. That HP14 probably the same hardware underneath as an HP mt45 mobile thin client. But anyways. 4000 Passmarks is around the same ballpark as the i3-8145U found in the m90n IoT.

What does the idle power consumption looks like? Time to reach into my Ekecity Voltson smartplug and see what the Vesync app say about power consumption. Here's idle with a single active LCD screen and not much happening - about 9w. Keep in mind that this is base Win10 Pro testing with one LCD active. Linux power consumption testing and heat retention/hysteresis testing is on part 3.

Anyways. What can you do with it?

Auto Modellista for the GCN works fine on emulation.

As does Rogue Leader GCN.

@Patrick we need a way to rotate images on the forum software.

Note that CPU and GPU usage isn't too bad. What does power consumption look like while doing retrogaming? About 14-17w.

4FFC05C9-4797-444A-AD0B-59C9D5D08DD5.jpg

The same goes for video playback - it can go from 14 to 19w, depending on which format and color depth. H264 4k is on the lower end, H265 4k 10 bit is on the high end. Some spikes of up to 21w were observed.

What about transcoding on Handbrake (which can support AMD VCE/VCN video encoding)?

Well, CPU usage is high but the GPU usage isn't that much. AMD has to put some serious work in to catch up to nVidia and Intel - performance were not great and the CPU usage is through the roof. What about power consumption?

C5BE674F-63A0-4106-A46B-0BBEE127293D.jpeg

Maxes out the machine at 24w. I did not observe the machine go higher than 24w, but that's in Windows. The next fun one will be to see it perform in Linux.

It looks like the T730 will consume about 10 to 15 watts over the T620 plus. Initially I said no big deal but that adds up to around $10.50 a year. Crazy to think about.

Now I'm thinking of a netgate SG-1100...
dell wyse 5070 extended has a pcie x4 slot(openned slot) and j5005 cpu(15watts tdp), sometime ebay has under $200 with shipping plus tax included. similar passmark as T730 but 15-20 watts lower tdp.

or qotom boxes, but they are selled as new.

May I suggest that the discussion about a good pfSense box for @radian23 is moved to a separate thread before this one about T640 machines is derailed completely?
Hint: The easiest way for that, would be for @radian23 to create a thread in the "Networking" forum ;)

My thin clients has been arrived successfully. :) They are working very well with windows 10 as mediaplayer/netflix client.

Using wireless remote control this is excellent choice.

And the extra, these has ax200 wifi 6 wireless card installed, plus serial port.

I am very happy with the performance and the look of the client.

I replaced with the new clients one t620 and one t630 client.

And i got discount from the seller, it was 100 USD each, because i bought 4.

I'm not current on the state of wireless PC remotes. What do you use with the t640 that's been working for you?
I personally use a Flirc receiver and a Logitech Harmony 650 remote with my T640 for most things (i.e., Plex), and a Logitech K830 keyboard/trackpad when I need a keyboard. Works pretty well for me. I taught the "Plex" device in myHarmony some codes from an old Sony remote to fill in some gaps in the buttons and then mapped them to the keys I wanted in the Flirc software.

I am using a Chinese manufactured Air mouse. One side is a normal remote control, it is programmable, but everything works fine out of box with Win 10.

Poweroff etc. working fine. This side is working with gyroscope and after setting of mouse sensitivity, excellent choice using as a one button mouse.

The other side is a functionally reduced, but it is a useable english keyboard.

Both side has backlight, it can be turned off, of course.

Perfect with mpv and netflix client.

I used before buying this kodi plus flirc, plus odroid c1 arm pc-s remote controller, but it is much better.

Just got one for a $99 offer no tax, free shipping from this seller (from whom I have previously bought from). You guys got me wanting to get one to play with. With the current bucks sale it comes to be less than $95.

Put in $95 offer for this seller, which was accepted. Thanks for the heads up! I also have one from the OP's seller.

AMD fluid motion (AFM) is working well in this little machine, which makes it a perfect HTPC.

Software:
Bluesky Frame Rate Converer
K-Lite Codec Pack Mega
PotPlayer

1080p 24p/30p can run AFM smooth (up to 100mbps) with CPU ~50% & GPU ~80%, which should be sufficient to cover all 1080p BluRay.

4k + AFM is not possible, as the GPU goes 100% and Frame rate drops to 10fps

What is the purpose of using AFM feature?
AFM is a special "plugin" in vega3 GPU to add "frame" in movie/anime, making the movie more smooth as being able to play at 60 frame per second instead of original 24/30 frame.

It has big advantage especially on anime. It is hard to explain in text. you could search "amd fluid motion test" in youtube, you would see the huge difference.

Just got mine after a 3 day delay due to the storms. Pretty impressed for the price so far though I am finding the unit really bulky compared to the prodesk/elitedesk mini. Quickly installed 64GB of DDR4 3200 I got on sale for $50 a while ago and stuck in a 256GB SSD from a prodesk. Hard to beat for the price...
