I have 6x of the real 16tb exos 5yr warranty I bought a few months back and 2x of the 8tb versions and all have been solid. They have been similar to the enterprise HGST drives I have.

I've been running 12TB Exos disks (X12 and X14) in my storage systems for about two years (total of 16 HDDs). I've had one fail, Seagate replaced it without fuss. They seem to be fine although they do report a fairly large number of Hardware_ECC_Recovered errors. Here's a sample of smart data from one of them:

Nothing special, not a huge amount of load on these guys. Went with Exos because of the relatively low power consumption / TB at the time of purchase. I'm not sure I'd go with them again if WD Gold or Ultrastar DCs were in the same cost and power per TB category.

The Newegg reviews on the Exos have an uncomfortable number of DOA drives. Any such experience with for you guys?

The externals have been reported to have 3 years of warranty on the internal drives. That plus international warranty makes it a pretty brainless choice I think.

Nope, no DOA for me except one 8tb and that was probably due to poor shipping packaging. In fact, I would be willing to bet that even the newegg DOAs are all related to shipping damage versus just normal drive failure.

Keep in mind that the drives in those enclosures are for some reason not being given the full warranty--and there's a reason for that.

FWIW, I've read (e.g. from here), the raw value isn't necessarily an actual "error count". Some vendors apparently store information in half of the value and the number of errors in the other half or something like that. So my understanding is that the "Value", "Worst" and "Threshold" numbers are the things to look at: when the normalized and/or worst values approach the threshold value is when you need to be concerned.

It's just another random forum post, so take it with a grain of salt but seems to make sense.

I just received a bunch of of the 8 Seagate Expansions I ordered. Even before shucking, HD Sentinel already reports the internal drive serial. Curiously I plugged that into the Seagate warranty checker and it does indeed show warranty up till 1 Jan 2024 (3 years + 1 month) and reports it as Exos X. Also, I used the country I imported it to (not the US) and it shows the warranty as valid. So the imported set has a valid international warranty on the drive.

Just fyi for anyone who comes across this in the future.

I bought 3 Seagate 16TB HDDs at Amazon in US this year. The first one is Expansion in summer, the second one is Expansion on Cyber Monday, and the last one is Exos X16 last week.
I extracted Exos X16 drives from two Expansion cases and successfully registered 3 ST16000NM001G drives as Exos X.
The warranty of the first one is valid till Nov 2023, the second one till Jan 2024, and the last one till Jan 2026, so the drives in the Expansion has 3 years +, and the drive bought as Exos X16 has 5 years + warranty for me.

I checked the difference between Expansion and Exos X16 with Linux "lshw" command, and the version of both Expansion drives is SN02, and one of Exos X16 is SN03.

Where are you seeing this difference?
Edit: I see it now, it's the firmware. SN02 for me.
Is your bare Exos ST16000NM001G-2KK103 as well?

Code:
$ lsscsi
[4:0:0:0] disk ATA ST16000NM001G-2K SN02 /dev/sdb
[5:0:0:0] disk ATA ST16000NM001G-2K SN02 /dev/sdc
[6:0:0:0] disk ATA ST16000NM001G-2K SN03 /dev/sdd
Only the third one is what I bought as Exos X16.

Are you able to check the full model number? I think your output is truncated. There should be more text after ST16000NM001G-2K.

You are right. I checked them with FreeBSD (TrueNAS) "geom" command,
and found that all 3 of my drives have "ST16000NM001G-2KK103" at "descr" field.

I hope so, but I cannot guarantee what happens when it is broken within the warranty.
At least, the serial number of the bare drive was accepted through product registration at seagate.com, and it says, "WARRANTY: Valid till 19/Jan/2024".

The different firmware is troubling. There is a possibility that they can issue a policy to reject SN02 firmware.

Getting the same strange SMART data on fresh drives.

Drive that is undergoing Write/Read surface test:

I've got 9 of them. They all came with SN02 firmware but you can download SN03 and update them manually. All of mine updated with no issue.

It's not about the updating. The label on the drive states SN02 and you have no way of changing that. They can easily identify these shucked drives in the future if they didn't ever produce any real bare Exos with SN02.

8 of the 9 drives I have are bare drives with the 5 year warranty. They all shipped with sn02.
