So your theory is that there is actually a huge increase in absolute number of buyers rather than supply being lower than the last generation?

Nah, limited supply is definitely compounding the problem. It's a perfect storm of higher-than-normal demand, and very limited supply.
It just baffles me how quickly the price hike of 2000 series cards was forgotten, and these new "regular" prices for graphics cards are now used as a fixed point to convince people that 3000 series is exceptionally good value.

yeah, there was def a jump in price from 1000 to 2000. and i guess now a new norm with the 3000. but at least the jump with 3000 was justifiable when you compare the performance gain from the prior. so i guess that's why people jump on it.

For gaming I don't see a compelling need for anything faster than a GTX 1080.

For deep learning, the 3000 series puts up some impressive specs.

The 3080 blows away even 2070 let along 1070 at 4K. if all you do is 1080p at low to medium setting then 1080 is fine but for 4K you get a lot of improvement with 3080, not to even mention ray tracing if you ever want to enable that
