Heads-up - CDW stateside is selling a Wyse 5070 thin client for only 90 bucks. Looks like Celeron J4105 (Gemini Lake/Goldmont cores), 4GB DDR4, and 16GB eMMC. Probably a good alternative for an in-home HTPC or a small witness server - the GPU specs are in line with Kaby Lake for Quicksync. Pretty sure that Optiplex photo is an accident and the machine is not the PCIe equipped "extended" model off that line. If you got DDR4 laptop RAM and M.2 SATA handy this should make for a cheap little box that you can stash behind a TV or something.

Oh @Patrick - TinyMicroMini entry? Not sure if the OS licensing is good for much, but it "should" run Linux and/or ESXi (embedded NIC looks like Realtek though)

Being it CTO, how can you tell they are the j4105 vs j5005? 4gb vs 8gb, 16 vs 32? WIE10? If you've got a way of determining specs on CTO items on CDW outlet, please PM me ;)

Just remove BSTK from the product number and punch it into CDW's website - you'll see the specs for the underlying product. It's most likely one of their customers cancelled a large order and they had to move it out of the warehouse (at a loss, maybe?)

Only the first few pictures show Optiplex, the last three are fine. I wish they had a similar discount for WYSE 5070 Extended or HP T730.

Nice find! I can't believe I didn't find it. :)

You can also click on the bstk number when it's highlighted in the product detail and it will take you straight to the regularly priced item--great way to check what type of deal a deal really is. ;)
It shows a backordered unfortunately.
Because this is a outlet item, it's not backordered--it's GONE. There is no backorder on outlet items since outlet items are usually single pieces.

Well, my dude, there is this 101 dollar Asus E420 barebones kit....but from what I can gather it's a weak-as-French-tea Celeron 3685U, and it probably ended up here because it's bigger sexier sister the Coffee Lake E520 sold out already.

Yep and it's bga, so no upgrades either. :( It will probably drop one more time, maybe even twice so at $80 in 2 weeks it might be a good deal for certain use cases.

Yeah, the 5070 is a BGA design as well (as are most thin clients).
Thanks. I did try it on some others and it didn't work, so that makes me feel a little better!
CDW has the garbage-in/garbage-out syndrome. Take this machine for instance - its possibly a good deal but since no one else except CDW uses that Dell manufacturing # (not even Dell seems to list it or have a Lenovo PSRef lookup equivalent for it), so you don't know what you are dealing with. With HP and Lenovo products they usually give you the #ABA code (HP) or the product # used with Lenovo PSRef (unless it's a CTO model, but you can cross-reference similar Lenovo CTO offers on eBay).

With Dell? Not much luck on that one - I got a feeling it's the completed chassis code used by the build manifest but you can't directly query it (unless Dell has a hidden API for stuff like this). Oh well, when in doubt, quiz your CDW rep and see if they'll yell at their Dell counterparts for the info.

This 5070 fat version has a half-height pci-e for video card(it seems dell has 2 form factors of 5070). Another T730-like model with intel cpu? The only issue is that the maximum RAM in the specs is only 8GB(2x4GB).

J4105's passmark is 29xx and J5005 is 32xx. The power TDPs are better than 427BB.

The ebay link to the fat form factor: 5070 extended

Spec sheet is inaccurate for max ram, you can put at least 32gb (2x16gb) in it.

Well, yes and no. The 5070 ‘“fat” uses the same Radeon E9173 (Lexa/GCN4) video card as the t740 thin client. The t730 uses a FirePro W2100 (Olan/GCN1), so the video capabilities of the 5070 isn’t completely comparable. The funny thing is that the t740 comes with a Vega 8 (GCN5) GPU built-in, so it's actually a capability downgrade. I was supposed to look into whether any nVidia GTX1050M based cards will work in the t740, but haven't had a chance yet.

In a way, you can say that the 5070 "thicc" is like a t730/t740 in-betweener. The CPU (both the J4105 and J5005) is nowhere as powerful as the Ryzen in the t740 (hell, it's not even as good as the one in the t640), but it's comparable (or slightly better than) the RX427BB in the t730. It’s a Gemini lake Atom so it’s bang-for-buck ratio is excellent. The Steamroller architecture CPUs on the t730...were kinda crap, efficiency-wise. Its GPU is...ehh, it's a Kaby lake GT1. Not good for light gaming, but the Quicksync is decent enough. The Radeon R7 is somewhat better than the GT1 in gaming, but video encoder/decoding on the t730 is based on VCE4.2 so it won't do HEVC and 10 Bit H264 whatsoever (so it makes for a fairly meh HTPC).

Bottom lime: If you can get your hands on a 5070 Extended at a decent price (i.e. around 120-150 for a t730, and around 175-225 for a t640 on evilBay US) AND you plan to use it as an HTPC/Plex box connected to, say, an iSCSI NAS via a 10GbE fiber NIC, it's good potential value there.

Really? Goldmont Atoms can do at least 16GB per DIMM?
Intel traditionally gimps the memory controllers on the consumer Atoms.

Got proof?

I don't know J4105/J5005, but for the j3455, some of the QNAP users can use 2 x 8gb but some fail and the intel specs is only 2 x 4gb.

Eh, okay...but 2x8GB is only 16GB, and thats on a previous iteration with DDR3L memory...
One of the more popular NUC blogs stated that the Gemini Lake (Goldmont wave 2) Atoms have dual memory channels and can take 8GB SODIMM units reliably (giving it 16GB of RAM in 2 SODIMM sockets), but nothing about 32 or beyond. If this thread ends up being a definitive one for the 5070 series (like the previous ones for the t730/DT-122 or t740 machines) I want to make sure that the claims are backed by testimonials from people who installed it and can prove that it works.
