Hello all,

Like a lot of you (I guess) I buy reconditioned stuff for my home lab. Recently I bought a HP P440 raid controller but I didn't noticed the connection..

It's not a traditional two port SFF8087 but a wide sas port specific to HP controller (ebay link)

I have ordered this cable on ebay but I am facing a problem. It will get me with two male SFF8087 connector which are meant to go in a backplane. But I use traditional SAS to 4x SATA cable which are also male SFF8087..

Does anybody have a way to resolve this without cutting the cable and making re-soldering ?

Thank a lot for help.

Bit nasty but you could get a 8087 to external adapter then use external SAS to SATA cable to get your desired ports, though this is nasty it would work.......the cost of cables and the adapter probably cheaper to just grab a LSI raid card for <£30

Quickest/easiest solution might be to get a SAS expander if there is any way of fitting one in to your case...

Nasty but smart, it could work I guess. Do you know if there is any specification to watch for that kind of card to be sure to keep my SAS in 12Gb/S ?

I bought this particular raid controller because I needed a 12Gb/s SAS card to keep my SATA SSD in 6Gb/s.

I've got an Intel S2600gz, with a LSI 2208 that runs intel sata SSD at 6gb/s.

I don't know with your particular card but generally speaking, HP, Dell, .. raid controller are speed rated for SAS drives and drop down on step in speed if traditionnal SATA drives are attached.

So a 6gb/s SAS raid controller will only allow 3gb/s for SATA drive, which is fine for a RAID5/10 of traditionnal disks (like with my olds HP P420) but become a bottleneck with modern SSD.

This may be true for some sas controllers, but the above 2208 runs 2x cheap sata ssds in raid-1 at 6gb/s, and 2 intel dc3500s running at 6gb/s in JBOD mode.

I would like to know how to identify those who don't downgrade speed on SATA drive because these LSI you mention are cheap as hell compared to my P440 + special cable. For HP one it seem that they all downgrade speed.

You could find the p440 sas cable in CHINA Taobao website, from 10USD to 30 USD. It call 68pin sas cable or P430/P440/P830/p840 cable.
