Are you able to see if the SAS controller supports passthrough mode?

JBOD mode right there :) It's basically a standard LSI/Broadcom/Avago 3108 controller.

One thing I've discovered, finding parts for these is tough...unlike supermicro, aren't a lot of quanta parts floating around on ebay (like the supercap and 500w PSU's for example)

Nice!

Yea, the scarcity of the parts is both a good and bad thing. They can end up being very cheap because of the lack of demand, but the opposite could also be the case. Regardless, I think the value in these servers is unbeatable.

If yours happen to come with 500W PSU's, I'd be happy to trade you my 750's. I don't need 750w, I try to optimize my power supplies to get closer to my actual usage to slightly increase efficiency... I'm using at most maybe 100-120W (single 8c 85w processor + 2 sticks of ram and 4 ssds). I know it's a marginal increase, but i pay a lot for electricity, so every few watts i save helps :)

Off topic, but does anyone know if quanta servers can take engineering sample processors? Specifically QK3G E5-2630 V4? If they're generic like supermicro they should, but if they're more like Dell and hp, they might not...

I installed a pair of QFRE Xeon E5-2622 v3 processors into mine and haven't had any issues. Considering the E5-2622 v3 (non-ES) isn't even on their compatible CPU list these servers probably aren't super picky.

The V4 CPUs might need a BIOS update to work though.

Thanks. They're so cheap I decided to buy one to test (E5-2630V4). Got the Stepping 1 version which is supposed to be more supported. Should be here in a few weeks (coming from China). If it doesn't work not a huge loss, just out 95$

Good news! the latest FW for the raid controller from quanta is from like 2017. you can flash the latest from avago though: https://docs.broadcom.com/docs-and-....0-0119_SAS_MR_FW_IMAGE_APP_4.680.00-8505.zip

Code:
/tmp# storcli /c0 download file=/tmp/mr3108fw.rom
Download Completed.
Flashing image to adapter...
CLI Version = 007.1108.0000.0000 July 17, 2019
Operating system = Linux 4.15.0-65-generic
Controller = 0
Status = Success
Description = F/W Flash Completed. Please reboot the system for the changes to take effect

Current package version = 24.16.0-0082
New package version = 24.21.0-0119

YMMV, but my system successfully took it (I have the 12G SAS adapter in mine) and booted back up with array intact. According to firmware date this is the latest from 2018. If for some reason the link doesn't work, just go here MegaRAID SAS 9361-8i

Which slots did you guys use for RAM? I have 4 sticks of 32gb RDIMM but I'm not clear which slots to use. The manual doesn't say as well.

I used slot A0, B0, G0, H0. However, it refuses to recognize all 4 sticks. POST indicates DIMM initialization fail for A0, and B0.
Have you tried changing sticks around? I have only two 32GB sticks, but I put them in A0 and B0, no issue

I swapped around the modules and which yellow slots to populate. It always seems like it has some issue with slots on the first CPU. Not entirely sure if it's a board issue or CPU memory controller yet.

Update: Seems like it may be an issue with CPU seating/pin contact. I was able to get it fully working on another unit.

My units came with 3008 rather than 3108. I was able to wipe the IR firmware on the card and flash it to latest IT firmware.

FYI #2: This might be obvious to some, but not to me since I usually don't populate dual CPU's in these things. I shoved a Quadro P2000 in mine, and it would not show up in Ubuntu 18. I finally found somewhere that said the PCIE x16 slot is tied to CPU 1, so I inserted a second CPU in the box, moved some ram around, and voila! GPU shows up in Ubuntu. Sucks, but this will be a GPU accelerated PLEX server, so I guess it's fine.

The M.2 to U.2 adapter from Amazon works as intended and allowed me to use a couple EX920 drives. However, it seems that VMware dropped the support on these drives in ESXi 6.7U1, so I had to install an older NVMe driver in ESXi to get them to show up.
