found a local deal on a Dell T7600 workstation for $250

dual E5-2690 with 64gb ram and a raid controller, assuming its the perc

I am currently using a dual L5640 S5520hc for a esxi server and pretty happy with it.. it only pulls like 170w at the wall with everything going but its stuck at ESXI 6

was thinking this could make a good replacement or a pretty nice video edit workstation to replace an aging DX58so / W3680 setup with 12gb ram

thoughts?

I ran a Dell T5610 with dual E5-2670s and moved to a T7610 with dual E5-2650v2. They've been solid, I'd jump on that setup for $250.

I have talked myself out of buying the T7600 and its younger sibling, the T7610 and will stay with using a desktop PC for my (simple) video requirements.

The T7600 sports dual 1300W power supplies while the T7610 has dual 1100W. Yes, the consumption will be lower with fewer PCIe cards installed but the power numbers are too high for my budget. That said, $250 is a real good deal.

yeah.. not dual power supplies as far as I know..

the plus is that they are easy to replace from the outside like a server, bad is that they cost 4x what a power supply should cost for a workstation

these are dual 130w processors so yeah.. I am expecting any power savings from moving from a 1366 chipset to sandy to be trounced by the higher spec processors.. but at this price I can leave it going 24/7 for 3 years to make up the price difference going to v2 or v3+ chips... a similar setup using the newer processors start well over a grand

PSU rating has little to do with wall power draw. FWIW, back when I was crypto mining, I had a dual node, dual CPU 2680 v2s (4 CPUs total) that drew 500w from the wall at full CPU load. Idle was around 120w IIRC.

I missed the point. So your concern is that Dual 1300W PSU will run at a slightly lower efficiency than dual 1100W at 10% load? I would imagine both will idle at around 150W or lower. No?
