Ok so I run a single ESXI server with local storage and it works great for my needs.
I do however, want to start playing around with FreeNAS, vMotion, etc....

with that I was talking to a bud who gave me a machine to use for my 2nd esxi box. Matches my first so I'm good with that to add both to a cluster in vCenter (when I get there)..

but how does this look, what you would you recommend me doing/changing?

this is all in a test lab but performance and learning the right way is my goal!...
thx... any input appreciated...

Build’s Name:ESXI Cluster
Operating System/ Storage Platform: ESXI 6.7u2 / vCenter 6.7u2
CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2620 v4 @ 2.10GHz
Motherboard: Lenovo
Chassis: Lenovo P710
Drives: 3x 500gb SSD
RAM: 128gb DDR4 ECC 2400T
Add-in Cards: ConnectX-1 10gb CX4 connector
Power Supply: Lenovo
Other Bits: N/A

Usage Profile:
ESXI, vCenter, vMotion, etc

Other information…
Will be removing 2x SSD and placing into FreeNas once I get it all going.

Build’s Name:FreeNas
Operating System/ Storage Platform: FreeNas 11.1-U7
CPU: Intel Xeon E5-1630 v3 @ 3.70GHz
Motherboard: HP
Chassis: HP Z420
Drives: O/S: 1x128gb Samsung | iSCSI: 8x 500gb SSD
RAM: 64gb DDR3 ECC
Add-in Cards: ConnectX-1 10gb CX4 connector, Dell H310 flashed to IT mode (thanks to yall)
Power Supply: HP
Other Bits: N/A

Usage Profile:
iSCSI storage - may do NFS as well to toy with

Other information…
Latest FreeNas does not work with my ConnectX-1 10gb cards so have to go to this version which works. Plan to use for iSCSI and maybe NFS storage for VMS, VSR backups, etc...

I think what you have is fine. Also, if you can swing it get a switch.

On the CX-1's it is usually not too expensive to get newer 10/40GbE NICs.

I also find that I consume storage faster the more I have. I thought I was fine, then I discovered Blackmagic 4k60 RAW shooting.
8x 500GB in RAID 10 is under 2TB usable, especially with snapshots. You will use that fast!
