I got 14 of these at $20/ea best offer a couple of weeks ago.
Some are listed as "Sun Oracle" with similar model number.
There must be a lot out there. There are lots of sellers.

I have 12 in a HP D2600 enclosure, lsi controller and proliant running ZOL.
As six mirrored pairs, filled it up 50% and scrubbed. No issues so far.

Did you find that the ones with Sun/Oracle firmware behave differently than HGST firmware in terms of activity LED?

blinux- I noticed what you’re talking about with the LEDs, and some 3TB HGST “SUN “drives I got in last week .

however it’s my understanding that this doesn’t have to do with the drive nor the firmware, but rather is the expected behavior on supermicro backplanes when you use an SAS drive versus sata.

I have seen the same thing with non-sun hgst drives and SAS versus sata LED light behavior.

The rough rule of thumb on supermicro, is SAS drives the LED stays illuminated and flickers on activity. SATA drives the LED is off and flickers on activity . ( i’ve seen a supermicro FAQ answer stating this as well)

One other minor thing to note, based on the Hitachi 7k3 specs (same on 7k4 model too) , these SAS drives use .5 W more power at idle compared to SATA drives. However on activity they are .5 W more efficient. ( amoung other pros/cons )

@james23 no, I'm talking about SAS vs SAS HDDs, but one with HGST firmware behaves as you describe, while ones with Sun/Oracle firmware behave like you describe for SATA, except they are SAS.

They are on a HP server and HP enclosure, but a non-HP LSI 2308 controller. At idle, some green activity lights are on solid and others are off. I don't depend on activity lights for anything, so it hasn't been an issue for me.

The 'sas2ircu .. locate' command lights up the correctly numbered drive's blue LED. This been more important for me.

When I get a chance, I'll attach them to an HP controller and see whether that makes a difference.

"Sold as Special Offer" is what's displayed for anyone buying at the listed discounts for more than one drive, so likely anyone with 4+ paid the listed $28.75 each.

I found a listing for some 3TB drives where the seller accepted 18/ea for 28, can't complain too bad about that. They seem slightly newer too, build date of 2014. Seemed to be non-Oracle/IBM.

fyi, the ebay listing (now sold out) from OP said he was out of town till dec 26, maybe that is why ppl were seeing the delay in replies, he did accept my best offer of 225$ (22.5 each, really good deal assuming they are good). they shipped out/scanned in ups yesterday, ill update once i get them and test them.

Seller didn't accept an offer for 23/each, but on the same day later he accepted an offer for the same disks in a 5-pack for 24/each.
Does anyone have real mfg date and power on time of these drives?

My order from HGST Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000 HUS723030ALS640 3TB 7200RPM 64MB SAS 6.0Gb/s | eBay showed up. It was well packaged, with each drive in a static-dissipative bag, wrapped in a few layers of small bubble wrap, and all the drives were then placed in a larger box with more bubblewrap and packing peanuts.

Unfortunately, I can't test them since I'm dumb and don't have a SFF-8087 - SAS cable for my testing setup, and I don't want to stick drives of unknown provenance in any box I care about until I have a chance to actually test them.

I should have the appropriate cable here thursday.

i just got my 10x in (bo of 225 ), seller took great care/effort in the packing, double boxed w bubles around the innerbox, and styrophome seperating 2x rows of 5x drives. Im not big on drives being able to touch each other during shipping, but i think the seller just wasnt aware of better ways to pack hdds. se epicts

the dates on all 10x are NOV-2012

will post smart data from 1x or 2x and results of my stresstestes.
(sorry for lower res then id like, it seems there is a resolution limit on uploads :(

so so results so far, im a fan of sata over sas when in comes to smart data (i know how to read sata smart data much more effectively than sas smart data, and sata smart gives you much more info/detail than sas smart). These 10x are HUS drives, so SAS (and thus sas smart data)

so ive looked at all 10x drives (they are stress testing now, will update results of that in a few days) -

all have POH of ~5.11 years, 4 or 5x have 1-4 uncorrectable errors logged , 5x have 1-4 non-medium errors

they all have between 26 TB to 168 TB written

(im not too good with sas smart data, so lmk if these are the "bad" things , that i think they are , im guessing these are similar to sata drives reallocated sectors or Off-Line Uncorrectable Sectors , as they were uncorrecatble even with sas's ecc)

Im attaching the full data from 8x of these 10x drive from HDD sentinel (its a html report of all data, in a zip file so i could attach it here), in that html IGNORE the 2x drives with ~526 days POH, those are from another batch im testing, the other 8x are this 10x batch.

and below is smart data from smartctl (freebsd) from 2x of the 10x drives
