I just finished taking photos, but you can also USB boot the system so you could technically do FreeNAS USB boot, then use SSD for cache and hard drives for storage.

Thanks! in for 2 as well
Let's see if I can drop in a Mellanox CX3 for some 10G.
Wonder how it will perform with urbackup.
This looks like a great replacement for my old HP WHS (Home Server)

Product

That's the Canadian version, in at about 520CAD + ship.... The exact model (1TB) is around $840CAD or so, very good deal at $175US if you can get on it...
Sounds like someone needs a US shipping address and a cheap plane ticket.

@samat.io my issue is I now need more easy stores!

Mini-ITX ? I would almost be tempted to take the case and sell the board, ram and put in a c3000 series in, compact case, that clearance height looks a worry though...

I doubt that experiment would go very well. HP is known for making things proprietary just because...

I'm also wondering if it's a 1x8gb or 2x4gb config. For a ZFS server with 8tb drives I'm thinking 16gb would be desirable. I've used FreeNAS in the past but these days I prefer vanilla FreeBSD.

They are not exactly right for mITX IIRC from earlier. You have two PCIe slots v. 1 on mITX.

@Joel my X3421 one was 1x 8GB Micron

Keep watching STH "Great deals", ( then you go broke )

I posted few months ago, Newegg had the
SUPERMICRO CSE-721TQ-250B Black Mini-Tower Server Case 250W Flex ATX Multi-output Bronze Power Supply

onsale for low $75 each.
This is the case make for SM ITX boards.

Thanks @Marsh i so have a 721’s at home with d-1540 for a backup destination now, I just like the look of the HPE box.
I think everybody is right it would probably hurt to do it and find the cpu cooler won’t fit or is not tall enough or the PSU plugs are wrong which anyway makes selling the existing board hard.

I keep flirting with the idea of the SM CSE-300 1u case as a nice compact system but I also keep coming back to that being load and expensive way to do it.

Right now I am really resisting to see how much shipping is on these HPE Microservers are for me anyway as it’s too damn tempting to build a storage cluster from them... I even have at least 10 x 2tb disks + 240-256gb ssd, 10g cards to do it in a really cost minimal way for 5 nodes

I was telling @Patriot earlier,

$25 for the 128GB boot SATA SSD
$18 for the SATA in PCIe x4 card
$28 for a CX3 10GbE card
$199 for the microserver

That puts you at $270 or $67.50 per drive to get it connected to 10GbE.

Given, these are not fast CPUs (albeit with some GPU at least), but if you just want a small storage cluster, this is really intriguing.

As some saw, we are reviewing the higher-end Microserver Gen10. I was checking pricing and saw the base dual core 8GB and 1TB model on the HPE page for $175. Small Business Marketplace

If you wanted a raspberry Pi cluster alternative these plus 10GbE NICs would make an interesting low cost storage Cluster nodes. 5 nodes for $875 and you could start with 5x 1TB that it comes with.
Well, my concern is that they might be dumping stock on a slow moving product before something "really good" launches next year. A similar price drop occurred on the MicroServer G7 not long before the G8 announcement, and I got a weird feeling that the G11 is around the corner and either Epyc or embdded Ryzen based.

Oh yeah, expectations management - The Opteron X3216 is based on the 28nm AMD Excavator architecture, but with only 2 cores and more thermal/turboclocking headroom (15w @ 1.6 to 3.0GHz), so if you have a t630 thin client (the t620 replacement without the PCIe slot), well, that one has a quadcore excavator but thermally limited to 16w/2-2.2Ghz, and performance-wise they are about the same, or if you have the t620 plus (a very common homelab toy here), well, those 4 jaguar cores are 2GHz and 25w, and they put in about the same performance numbers. Just think of the X3216 as like a t620 Plus but with a quad SATAIII backplane. If you have an HP MicroServer Gen7 that needs replacement, it's okay (but not far enough to really make a huge impact), if you have a Gen8, it's a step backwards and not recommended. However, if it's $175 for the chassis with 8GB of RAM (1x8GB DDR4) and a single SATA non-hotplug drives, it's not entirely terrible. Hell, some of the HPe foundation care packs costs just as much as that box, if not more...and yeah, I guess you can buy a few and stack them up to form storage clusters.

Oh yeah, if you wanna see what I consider to be a decent deal for Gen10, perfect for Gen7 folks or people with BYOD and a need for more firepower, check out the X3421 barebones model on Insight - currently $486. That's Insight Part P04923-S01 - the base Gen10 but with the fastest CPU shipped for the series, no HDD included. Considering that the X3421 benchmarks much better than the X3216 (it's as fast as the i7-6560U found in the 6th Gen Skylake NUCs), you are still getting 8GB of RAM right out the gate (good enough to do some very useful stuff in the house). With Windows 10, it'll make a decent home media server. If you can get ESXi to passthrough an nVidia GT1030, it can be a compelling plex box and a light/mid-duty hypervisor. Granted, it ain't no Xeon or Eypc, but it's good bang for the buck and a slight bit more future-proof.

@WANg i'm not concerned really about the speed as much. I think of it more like an atom server.

For storage its fine. For extra cluster nodes its fine. I'm not expecting crazy performance. I'm expecting a cheap way to put drives online

Now that’s cruel suggesting they may be about to launch something better. You know just about everybody would jump on a modern AMD embedded solution... some how I think not right now but never know. If anything I was thinking they may dump it all together, everything goes to cloud.

I'm with you on this. At $200 it's even cheaper than a 4 bay Synology with similar form factor and power consumption plus I can run my own OS on it.

My only wish item that it doesn't have is IPMI. I wanted the 4C version but this price is too good to pass up. Even the used G8s are going for ~$400 on eBay.

Very tempting to replace my gen7. I will my perhaps ask my brother to buy it for me. Do you have an idea of the weight of the package?

edit : is there a similar deal for the X3421 version ?

@caplam 25lbs I believe was the listed weight.

On the X3421, I paid like $450 for it the X3421 review unit with 8GB and no drives.

As a point of comparison, the X3421 is maybe 8-10% faster than the Atom C3558.
