Take E5-2683 v3 , older E5-2683 v3 ES chip ( no turbo , not worth buying ) is hoovering just a bit tad below $300.
Before the mega thread, $250 for QS or better is the high end of price range, now I am seeing $500 on ebay today.

In the mega thread, some kind soul produced bios mod for ASUS ,ASROCK , MSI ,Gigabyte boards.
Took few minutes to flash the bios with the bios mod. Boot the OS, you are set to have all core turbo performance.
I wonder how worth it is now though with the price drops on thread ripper v1 chips lately. LGA 2011-v3 still means DDR4 so no ram savings. I have to admit AMD has thrown a wrench into the price to performance ratio of old xeon systems at this point.

AMD CPU pricing are good, but good AMD system boards are still expensive. It is a balance.

The boat of cheap E5 v3 , and cheap DDR4 ram had left the dock since early 2017.

@Marsh - I've not ventured myself as mine are Supermicro X10SRA boards and read some posts that the heatsinks on voltage regulators are better on the other boards.
Have you tried any Supermicro boards? Are you using liquid cooling or just the regular active heatsinks.

So if you were able to get v3 before the price increase, with the mod, would that make those v3 cpus the best bargain performance, even more than v2 or ryzen/TR, excluding ddr4 price?

During 2016 to early 2017, DDR4 ram pricing was normal, $60-$65 per 16gb ram stick. I got some as low as $50 per 16gb stick.

E5 v3 QS or retail CPU was even cheaper than v2 in 2017

While on this forum , folks were focusing on v2 CPU in 2017, at the time , there were lots V3 CPU bargain.
I picked up over 40 V3 cpu , the most dollar per CPU that I paid was the E5-2683 v3, average out to less than $100 per cpu.

V3 CPU motherboards were ridiculously cheap as well. $100 for Asrock xtreme 6 , Asrock workstation board, Ascrock taichi.
Amazon warehouse sale for dual CPU boards SM , ASUS ( even workstation board ) were around $175 to $225.
For the price, I have little choice but keep using the V3 CPU systems.

I understand that we have not yet invented a time machine. Those price are no longer available today.

Although I use many SM boards for server purpose, I have not use SM board for the all core turbo mod.

I mainly use Asrock and ASUS boards, the boards have dual bios , make life a lot easier in case the bios mod went to hell.
I just flip the dual bios switch , the board would comes back to life. "No bricked"

Back in the 2017, I have over 30 systems with all-core-turbo boards doing CPU mining 24x7 for a year.
It has CollerMaster 212 EVO cooler , CPU stayed cool.

The bios mod also reduced Vcore voltage to reduce heat and increase CPU stability. The end result is same or less voltage for higher clock speed.

Yes, I personal use x99 taichi board and ASUS server version of z10pe board ( not the WS version ).
In the mega thread , there is a bios mod for the ASUS WS board.
i'll have to dig thr the 100 + page of that thread....lol... let me know if you know which page has the bios mod :)... If i can get 20% improvement in multicore performance, i am happy :)

Which CPU are you referring to ? E5-2683 V3 ?
It is one of the popular CPU for the turbo mod.
User had reported the CB mark before and after turbo mod in the mega thread.

My two procs showed up the other day. Haven't had a chance to clean them up and pop 'em in yet, but wanted to share packaging and condition from this seller. IMO the packaging was decent ok for protection against physical damage (though not ESD) and the CPUs look in OK shape. Will try to get them cleaned up and in servers tonight.

Mine looked exactly the same as your pictures. I cleaned them up a bit, and all are working good.
Good buy!
