Genuine Intel Xeon E5-2695v2 SR1BA 12-Core 2.40GHz 30MB LGA-2011 | eBay

It's kind of a middle of the road cpu in term of single core and multicore performance... but i think compared to 2690 v2 and 2696/7 v2, it's a better price right now.... It's probably not the most popular v2 cpu, less demand, lower price....

also cool to see the large number of cores..:)

Edit: new link here for even lower prices:

The problem I've got with these is that while they're pretty cheap for what they are, I don't have much use for single server setups these days. Most of the cool tech like VSAN, HA/FT etc is only available when you've got multiple servers. So whenever I think of building something, it's usually at least a 3 node cluster. Which means that even at $150 a piece, I'm still spending at least $900 just on CPUs. And after adding the cost of all the other parts to those $900 - that's when I start thinking long and hard about possible ways to shave that total cost down.

Funnily enough, number 1 component to save money on for a multi-node cluster is usually the CPU. :) Maybe I'm doing it wrong (not an IT pro, it's just a hobby for me), but whenever I try to calculate the total cost of a 3-node cluster with 12-core Ivy chips vs a 4-node cluster with cheap 8-core Sandy chips - they're almost the same. The total number of cores is pretty close ((12+12)*3 = 72 cores vs (8+8)*4 = 64 cores), but the savings from the CPU downgrade almost buy the whole extra node with the motherboard, 128gb ram and 2-3 enterprise SSDs. I'm still very confused with this and trying to figure it out for my builds.

That listing from my post above is down to $120 now! That is a good price indeed. :D Bought 4 more. At this price they actually make sense to me.

Hmm. I wonder whether it was a technical mistake on their (or ebay's) part. A fire-sale on a single item might be intentional, but doing it for everything, all those hundreds of items they've got.. I don't know, now it starts to feel a little bit fishy. I did order 6 of those in total, let's see whether they ship.

hmm, it does sound suspicious now.... i mean this was selling like hot cake at $150 anyway, wondering why he is reducing the price even more? I am a little concerned now if this is a hacked account or fraud....
