Hate to say this but the better deal is actually e5-1620 or even 1650 v2... You can get an e5-1650 v2 right now only ebay for $100 or less, give up very slight single core by 0.1ghz but blow up this latest POS thing from intel in multicore by almost 2x. on top of the much cheaper ddr3....

The e5-1650 v2 is 4 core/8thread... e5-1650 v2 is 6 cores/12thread,

Newer is not better always!

Only if yr cpu is at 100% all the time.... the power saving is much less for typical use when cpu is like idle or less than 50% most of the time

I disagree 100%.

The V2 are much more efficient than a V1 of course, but an idle E5 v2 will use a LOT more power than this CPU.

Comparing these to an E5 is a bit of a stretch.

The only thing intel has done here is stay in the consumer market (competing with AMD) and for some savvy people who know they don’t need the Xeon label provide a decent powerful system for very little $$
As always somewhat memory limited.

I3 solution is cheaper than the d-2123it if you don’t need 10g

No complaining from me about more options that's for sure

This is the cpu that is in my Hackintosh, runs really REALLY well.

Also ran it as a Windows 10 gaming pc for a while and really runs great, VERY snappy and responsive. Ran every game thrown at it.

Will go back to Windows 10 as soon as High Sierra messes up.

Highly recommended.


EDIT: I gust pulled the ssd that had OSX on it and put the windows 10 ssd back in and went into the bios to change things and realized I only thought I had the 8300, I actually have the 8100..........tell you what the ol memory is not what it used to be.

I still highly recommend the 8100, excellent price/performance.

No it's a newer CPU that needs a newer chipset.

The 0.1GHz increase in clock speed isn't really justification for the 50+% increase in price, is it?

good price at frys.. unfortunately only avail for pickup.. therefore offlimited to most of the US population ;(

I got our review unit for well under $150 on the i3-8300 but used current pricing. It also has 2MB more cache @Dev_Mgr

You are right though, the i3-8100 seems to be a viable alternative mentioned briefly in the article.

I'm considering the i3-8300 for a new pfSense build, and possibly a FreeNAS one.

For me, I'm looking for mostly as high OpenVPN throughput as possible. Right now I'm waiting for mITX C246 motherboards to be available, preferably thin mITX. Possibly I could use a consumer "gaming" H370 mITX motherboard, but it's not preferred.

I just ordered one on Amazon for $125, despite the fact that the gym I go to every day is 5 minutes from Fry's.

We shall answer this soon. My suspicion is that an i3-8100 will be a great pfSense alternative to save some money.

I am sure the % difference will be minimal, and that it will still be a single thread monster.
I know the e3’s were not that pricy but this cpu is cheap, the whole rest of system costs though.

it's good power use is drastically cut compared to ivy bridge but the computing speed is not exactly higher for the current price of the cpu.. if anything the older cpu pricing is somewhat better....... not to mention ddr4 and system cost... as well as limited ram....

If you are really on a budget or want to put together a budget server, i still think you should consider the older parts..... are you going to ever save enough on electricity to make up the cost?

im currently running a Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1265L v3 on a SM [URL='https://192.168.0.46/cgi/url_redirect.cgi?url_name=sys_smbios#']X10SL7-F with 32GB ECC DDR3-1600 Ram. I have a 1080 video card on it and using it currently as a Steam gaming station. Probably going to also include some form of Cam IP software and a storage for it at some point. [/URL]
Currently with hardward (has 2 ssd) its idling around 50-60 watts. IDK when gaming, but i not often enough that i care about the watts at that point.

comparing the specs of the two CPU e3 vs newer I3, I dont know if upgrading makes sense. Especially with the costs of DDR4 memory.
Any ideas? I havent checked ebay pricing on the current hardware to see how much it would offset the new hardware.
