So many things to buy... my v1 2670's keep chugging along.. It's hard to buy a little upgrade. I keep eying the v2 2697's but never pull the trigger.

I jumped on the 2696 v2 when it was $290 each. that was like over 1 yr go. The price of that hasn't gone down one bit since....lol..

Since then, i have acquired a collection of 2011 v2: one 2650 v2, two 2660 v2, two 2680 v2, two 2690 v2.

So i guess my next addition should be 2670 v2 and 2667 v2? the 2667 v2 is really hard to find for cheap...

egg had EP2C602 for $199 last week, would pair nicely with a pair of V2

Awfully tempting and Threadripper v1 is almost at price parity - 1950x for $499 new and used even less.

Exciting times ahead!

Also there seems to be a dual socket x79 mobo found on taobao.

Not sure if it's legit.

Converts to about $150 excluding S&H.

that's not bad but the problem is so limited slots of memory. if you are going dual cpu you are a power user most likely that will need more than 64gb ram..

not exactly sure what the purpose of this board beside bragging right of smallest dual cpu?

Maybe I'm just dense..or old...or too paranoid. Do you really want to buy a noname motherboard from China? I don't even care how cheap it may or may not, that's just a no no.

It will probably be less than $499 when TR v2 is out. Then we will have to see if 2696 v2 drops to less than $250. if 2696 v2 is less than $250 then that would be competitive given the ddr3 vs ddr4 difference. otherwise most people probably should just go with TR...

Those chinese X79 boards are manufactured quite recently to cash in on the availability of cheap 2011 CPUs. Used to assemble primarily desktop machines and not for server purposes. Also you don't need quad channel for that. You may actually get better performance and lower latency with just dual channel memory for gaming workloads. And yes they probably sell to ignorant customers that just see "dual socket for cheap" and go crazy and not thinking that there are better single socket systems out there for about same price.

also, for those that are buying for 1 cpu board and not planning to ever use a dual cpu set up, also should consider e5-1650 v2 6 core for about the same price. This part is 3.5ghz so basically faster single and quad core speed for slightly slower multicore.. . just something to consider ;)

Not sure how many people but it seems like the most expensive v2 cpu right now is actually the 1680 v2 selling for over $350 a lot of time.... i guess only because it seems to have the highest turbo frequency of 3.9ghz...

1680 v2 is expensive because it's one of the few xeons that can be overclocked (unlocked multiplier). Most of them go for 4.3+GHz.

Does anyone know whether it's possible to run such a 1680v2 on Supermicro X9xxx dual socket boards?
From what i ve heard, only a certain single socket MB can you do good overclock. Sure you can run the 1680 v2 cpu on any dual 2011 v2 since it's a e5-1xxx v2 part..
