not bad... but is it worth the $30+ premium over e5-2670 v1 right now?
It's definitely worth it, just to get 2 extra cores and pci-e 3.0 support for only extra $30. It's hard to justify buying the 12-core Ivy Bridge cpus right now, considering how they're $100+ for those 2 extra cores (= 100%+ compared to 10-core processors), but 2670 v2 seems to be the best bang for the buck at the moment.

What board are you putting these in?
i've put these in a lot of different machines... helped a few friends build up their HP Z820 workstations with these. I've also put them in some servers with Supermicro X9DR3-LN4F+ motherboards. And just this weekend, I used a pair for my daughter's computer that has a Supermicro X9DAi. I've been buying from this seller since late last year and pickup a few pairs from them whenever they have these in stock.

Thank you.

I should have asked... What cheap motherboards are you putting this in. That's my problem.

I would have to ask, what is "cheap" to you?
Once again, true.

I was looking at second-hand boards for use. That meant, to me at least, maxing out at around 150$ unless it had a number of 'special' uses- high PCIE x16 with space for cards (renderer), or perhaps integrated 10gb. With the age of the Supermicro X9s I'd been avoiding them, but knowing they're still good I could consider that.

Basically trying to figure out how to put 2 full size x16 cards and a RAID controller in a box... and having a heck of a time doing it cheaply. Or more cheaply I should say.

As mentioned above, I helped a few friends build out their Z820 workstations, which has an onboard SAS2308 (although, it appears to be connected as x4, not the usual x8, but PCI-E 3.0) and has room for 2 GPUs. There are also 4x HDD 3.5" bays, and you can add more by adding 5.25" backplane cages. Anyway, the system in barebone config was about $500, or a little less actually. We added these CPUs, RAM, GPU, HDDs, etc.

Most Supermicro X9D boards are going to be hard to find for under $150. If you're patient, there are occasional sales in the $150-$200 range. If you're less patient, it's not too hard to find in the $200-250 range.

An e5 v2 CPU has 40 pci-e (3.0) lanes. You can put as many x16 lanes on a board as you want, but in the end, a single CPU board can have a max of 40 lanes. This is not counting any lane(s) from the PCH. Always look at the block diagram of a board to see how it's wired. If the manufacturer does not provide a block diagram, skip the board.

kinda depressing that the cheapest decent e5 v2 right now on ebay is the 2650 v2 for $100. which is direct equivalent to e5-2670 v1...

anyone else knows a better deal? lol

this seller re-lists the E5-2670 v2 often, so if you can wait just keep an eye on their listings.

So many things to buy... my v1 2670's keep chugging along.. It's hard to buy a little upgrade. I keep eying the v2 2697's but never pull the trigger.
