Anyone have experience using these as caching devices in VSAN? All 4 striped together?

Haven't used with VSAN, but they work just like a standard HBA, with 4 SSDs attached. The OS doesn't recognize the difference. I use the 400GB version in Freenas as a L2ARC, and it did that job well, as far as I could tell.

Has anyone been able to flash these? They show up as Seagate Nyro's, but the Seagate firmware won't load on them.

Any suggestions?

Awesome, thank you, I missed that thread!
No problem. PM me if you run into any issues (but I recall it being straightforward once I had the right files). Not sure if that firmware is the most current any longer, but what I ran when I had F40s. Also, I believe there are two sets of firmware to update: (a) LSI controller (use LSI Nytro Warpdrive), (b) Sun firmware (what I provided). It has been a while, so you may want to double check that, but I'm nearly certain that was the case.
  • Firmware Version: 113.05.04.00 (b)
  • Legacy BIOS Version: 110.00.01.00 (a)
  • That firmware should get you to 113.05.04.00 and to confirm via ddcli (I had the output saved with my documentation):
Code:
Select the WarpDrive [1-2 or 0:Quit]: 1

1. List WarpDrive Information
[removed]

Select Operation [1-8 or 0:Quit]: 1

Mine showed up today.

Packaging was absolute crap. They literally put it in an antistatic bag, stuck that in a bubblewrap envelope, and rolled that up maybe once.

I have to pull the server it's going in out to check if it still works, but really, a crappy bubblewrap envelope?

The package version is emoji.

The drives do show up.

(Sorry about the crap image. I was frantically trying to get my phone while it was still on-screen).

They're not unused, but the drives seem in decent shape. 26K on time hours, that's ~3 years. Only ~60 TB writes over that, and all the sub-SSDs have 99-100% life remaining.

They're 28% overprovisioned.

Just FYI these drives do NOT work with VSAN as VSAN requires 512 or 4k physical sector size and these are 8k. VSAN won't write anything to these SSDs.

That and these use the crappy mptsas driver. I have tuned the 1.2tb version but 6.5 and later really does not like these. Many io stalls and you'll see target errors in your logs all day long.

I'm moving mine from vSphere to being installed in a Linux 40gbe San box, and seeing it it behaves any better.

These get hot too..

Just fyi.. I like mine but I just replaced it with a 1.6tb Intel SSD and while the SSD is slower on paper it is faster under esxi due to not having driver problems...

Dunno, I have 3 of those, 1 in each of my 3 servers Vsan cluster.
I use 3 drives for capacity tier and 1 for caching tier in my lab. They work pretty well. Also performance seems to be great. Haven’t yet ran hcibench, but I did clone 25 vms which took almost same time like using my NetApp 2552 over nfs.

Are you on vSphere/vSAN 6.7? Which driver version are you using?
I would love to get them working.

Thinking about these for my VMware hosts. I briefly owned an F40 but it died after a week. Definitely can't get an 800GB SSD for $80 any other way.

I also picked up 2@$80/each from this seller
I bought 10 x 4TB HGST SAS from him last week and they shipped pretty fast.
Time to see how they perform in S2D

I'm always worried about airflow when I use any LSI Raid controller and I bet these run hot!

I also picked up 2@$80/each from this seller
I bought 10 x 4TB HGST SAS from him last week and they shipped pretty fast.
Time to see how they perform in S2D

I'm always worried about airflow when I use any LSI Raid controller and I bet these run hot!
no, not too hot. mine are usually around 50~60C and work just fine.

Has anyone added a fan to these? I was thinking a small one could be mounted - it looks like it has a 5v pin.

no, hasn't been necessary in my server. the metal enclosure around the 4x SSDs are suppose to act as a heatsink. perhaps you can just use some thermal tape and just stick on a larger heatsink if you have the PCI slot next to this card vacant?
