Which C2758 board? Is it mITX or uATX? If its the mITX version have you thought about a fanless heatsink case instead?

I used these for a "customer" once - dead silent: Akasa Thermal Solution
It's mini-itx but I was going with the E300 for the extra space for cabling and the ability to move to a FlexATX board in the future if need be. I have seen those fanless heatsink cases but how effective are they really? I imagine the case will get fairly warm with the CPU getting pushed hard to achieve as close to gigabit VPN as possible.

The following worked out well for me ... compact and quiet ..sold to another STH member:

SC504-203B 1U Chassis
Supermicro X10SDV-TP8F
Supermicro C0057A4L PWM Active

I think i had to get a different IO plate for the mobo in the 504-203b chassis
.. i can dig that up if truly interested

using this same setup for pfsense but with a 505 (i think) chassis. In addition, added 3 noctua 20mm fans. They helped bring down the temperature by a few degrees. With a E300 case compared to SC504/505, basically, you lose the internal PSU heat source and a bunch of empty space where the drives will go. It should make the setup more efficient.

I have 3 fans screwed into the area in white. All the area to the right of the motherboard will not be present in the E-300.

The Akasa heatsink case is very effective. It does get warm, but not hot. Cooling up to 35W TDP is perfect.

I have virtually the same setup in my current firewall which houses the c2758 though I have just two fans instead of 3. Temps rarely go above the mid 40's. I'm definitely curious to see how much the temps rise (as they inevitably will) in the E300 with the Noctua fans.

I see. It is tempting to have a silent case for my parents house. But $150 is a bit steep. Also these cases are for sale virtually nowhere.

Just got 2 for $30 US. I'll post to the thread with my findings. I don't have an add-on; just an SSD and an M.2 drive.
For those with this case and the xeon D board, I replaced the two stock fans with 01000L4's and they helped quite a bit with the noise. The RPMs are about 40% lower (under 3000 RPMs). I'm half tempted to see if a 3rd fan will help; but I believe someone already posted it won't.

Have you been having issues with the latest 2.4.2 release? I also have an e300 with pfsense and I've been encountering a problem where every 30 min to an hour routing stops with no log messages or anything.

I've been running a E300-8D system as pfSense router / firewall for over 6 months now and i replaced the 2 stock fans with 3x SuperMicro FAN-0100L4 and its much quieter than stock. Still by far not silent enough to have it next to you, but a room away its fine.

They are also 40mm fans with the same connectors, just lower rpms.

CPU temp is 55 degrees @ 4300 RPM.

It's running 16G of 2133 ECC RAM and a Trancend MSA370 128G M.2 SSD and the riser with a dual 10G RJ45 X540 card.

has anyone tried the noctua fans with the xeon d motherboard? I've swapped out fans already, but I'd be tempted to see if I can get the decibels lower with the case fans, or even placing a Noctua fan on the heatsink

Using noctua fan on top of the heat sink on Xeon-d but that’s a small cube case, not the 1u baby case in this thread.

I'll have to look if that fan will tuck in the 1u case. Still looking for feedback if anyone tried using Noctua case fans for the e300.

Has anyone tried using a X10SDV with an Akasa silent case? Basically, I really want a X10SDV-TP8F in some type of a small, near silent setup (it's going in my living room where I often have overnight guests).

None of the Akasa cases support the X10 boards. I even contacted them about it but none are supported. I had to settle for a C2758 build for my firewall because I was set on an Akasa case. They really are great, it's a shame they don't support more server boards.

Did the 504 case provide more air; allowing the system to be more quiet compared to the e300 case?

I would have guessed about the same, both 1u, sure the 504 is larger and maybe the drives further away from board but also has the 1u psu inside instead of a silent external brick (meaning less fans and less heat inside case)

Thanks for chiming in. I really want to keep mine but I have to sit next to it and it's just too loud for me (less than 6ft from where I sit).

Do note that’s just speculation with regards to 504 but I can’t imagine the 1u being any different except different in the default fans installed but they can be changed.

Best way to get away from noise is go for a non rack mount chassis generally.

I hear ya. I've already replaced the HSF and the case fans; and while that did help, sitting next to it all day is too much for me.
