I've been waiting for these things (called Snowy Owl originally I believe) for a while now as I was convinced they'd be a significantly better deal than the Xeon-D family... I suppose there isn't any news on boards partners and/or launch dates for these things though? I'm dying to see what Supermicro might come up with...

Edit: just noticed Supermicro conspicuously absent from the partners thingy, grr. Doesn't bode well for availability...

Would be very interesting if someone releases a 14/16 sata port mobo. Great fit for a storage node.

Aye, that's precisely why I've been avoiding purchasing an X10SDV-4C-7TP4F... I was hoping to see Supermicro emerge with a Snowy Owl equivalent with 12+ SATA ports, but there's no mention in the SoC spec about SATA channels so it seems entirely like these might be firmly in the network appliance bracket for now at least.

Hmmm wonder if HP will come out with a new microserver with one of these

@Patrick "AMD made the comparison to the Xeon D-2191 which is a low core count part." with 18 cores ?;)

Is the 8x10GbE embedded in the Zen chip? Is it 10GBASE-T or SFP+? Anyone know?

@Edu external PHY.

Each die apparently has 4x10GbE. Turned off in EPYC 7000 due to lack of customer demand.

Are there products on the market that uses these already?

I have been reading this article and was really furious at how Zen was capped by Socket AM4, as it seems that they designed it with the previous Excavator/Bristol Ridge in mind instead of making full use of Zen. 24 PCIe Lanes instead of 32, lack of the up to 8 SATA, no 10 GBit NIC, and this coupled with the lack of Workstation oriented Motherboards as there is no official ECC support nor IPMI.

Then I just noticed that there is a good analogous to the Ryzen 7 1700 in the Epyc Embedded line: The EPYC Embedded 3251. It is a fully featured single Zen die with everything that was left out of AM4. For a mATX build, you could get rid of Promontory and drive everything from a Zen SoC. The only thing where Zen feels a bit limited is in just 4 integrated USB 3, which means that maybe a third party USB Controller may be required, but otherwise Zen is just perfect. Wouldn't mind losing upgradeability, through I doubt that overclocking is possible and you're missing around 1 GHz worth of performance compared to a Ryzen 7 1700/1700X/1800X. Still, if price is right looks like a true beast to me.

And hey is the low end d-2100 boards are idling at 60+ watts then they could be power/performance/cost competitive ... issue will be will be see a shipping product in 2018 or will it end up 2019 when intel have shrunk the die of the SoC

Remember, D-2100 will have 4x DIMMs instead of 2x to fill memory channels. There is a lot of load that ends up coming from the rest of the system.

Just got another vendor's D-2123IT board in late this week. Hopefully will get it in a config to start testing tomorrow.

True but DDR4 is pretty low power, will be interesting to see the alternative vendor systems look like.

But in the context of this thread you know of and AMD boards coming ?

Can confirm I'm very much waiting here too, I check AsRock Rack and Supermicro sites once a week, no joy.

Emailed them too. Very much hoping for 5GB / NBASE-T stuff on one of these hypothetical boards to boot.

NBASE-T is pretty much DOA. 10G is now in all the server chips so nobody wants to support NBASE-T. I'm more wanting 25G support for faster lanes.

25G should be where it’s at I am hoping, cheap enough, Low power enough, switches reasonably already available. In Cisco land switches like 93180 are pretty standard if you need a fiber switch and support 10/25 on the 48 ports.
