Great thank you. I figured as much just wanted to verify with the datastore guys. Order placed. :)
Nearly always the case that enterprise drives will run rings around consumer on anything but the lightest workload. For sata that’s for me that’s intel like these or I am partial to the sm863/pm863 from Samsung mainly because of the value for money on the pm863 and larger sizes, recently though with the firmware issues others have been having with Samsung It’s made me think twice and do see intel as being better in this regard.

I just got the drive in, but a little worried about the SMART data. Would you keep the drive or return it an exchange and/or try another seller?

I just got my 800 GB drive, and it seems to work fine as far as I can tell.

Are there any best practices?

The current firmware is D201DL13, and I tried to update the firmware, but I just got a message that said "Please contact your Intel representative about firmware update for this drive".

This is the smart info:

Yes, should have mentioned that. I'm running it on the DVD-ROM SATA connection. So it's SATA2 speeds. I think. I was more worried if there is a known firmware bug, etc.

I did try to update via Intel firmware update, but as I mentioned that did not work, and I can't seem to find the Dell firmware update.

Great thank you. I figured as much just wanted to verify with the datastore guys. Order placed. :)
As much as the S3500 might be a better fit performance wise, buying new drives with warranty may still be warranted sometimes ... (what a pun!)

(mostly I'm just sad it's a hassle to order these over the Atlantic...)

One of the two drives has errors in the SMART data. Is this serious and should i return the drive?

Code:
# smartctl -a /dev/da15

One of the two drives has errors in the SMART data. Is this serious and should i return the drive?

Code:
# smartctl -a /dev/da15

That's a bit fishy, especially the power on hours (0?). The errors are no good, it seems to be having issues negotiating speed and other commands. Change the cable and port if you can and retest, also with another drive known to be working well...

Some eBay sales are hit or miss.

There was a seller asking $99/ea for 2 drives. I offered $150 and got them both. IBM-labeled Intel drives, firmware D201NB34, and SMART tells me:

Drive 1:
- Total Host Read: 823 GB
- Total Host Writes: 19,756 GB
- Gigabytes Erased: 170 GB
- Power On Count: 14 count
- Power On Hours: 10 hours

Drive 2:
- Total Host Read: 942 GB
- Total Host Writes: 15,342 GB
- Gigabytes Erased: 27 GB
- Power On Count: 15 count
- Power On Hours: 20 hours

That's a crazy amount of writes in so little hours, but everything seems great. I'm really guessing those hour counts **must** be wrong, riiiight?!

Anyway, a freaking bargain! Setting them as ZFS mirror for my VM storage! :)

Like member trumee above, I also got one of the IBM branded drives with firmware "D201NB34".

Anyone know how to update the firmware on these things? Of course Intel's native tool won't update it because it's IBM branded.

Thanks for any pointers...

So I got burned by this seller. Sent me 2 SanDisk refurbs instead. Given I'm in Canada he's refusing to even cover my shipping back let alone the import duties. Hope it works out for the rest of you.
