I think this is a really good deal:

2U Supermicro X9DRD-7LN4F-JBOD 12 + 2 Bay Server SAS2-826EL1 2x 2.1GHz Rails | eBay

Supermicro 826 chassis (12-bays + 2x 2.5" bays in rear for boot drives)
X9DRD-7LN4F+ - has onboard LSI SAS 2308 SAS controller in IT mode
2x Xeon E5-2620 V2 (so definitely IvyBridge ready)
BPN-SAS2-826EL1 backplane (SAS2 expander)
2x 920W SQ PSUs
dual port 10Gb NIC (intel chipset, but compatible with many DAC and SFP+ modules)
rails

All for $550+ shipping. BUT WAIT, there's more...

1) the seller has accepted offers of $525. will not go lower so don't try; i think i've already annoyed the crap out of them for asking.
2) apply PSPRING20 coupon for $100 off

Final total = $425 + shipping.

Shipping was reasonable, about $51 for me from UT to SoCal.

grabbed one, will make for a nice storage server in the colo, just hoping mine is specced the same as the picture since the description doesn't list the extras.

i've ordered a few of them. all of them came with the dual 10Gb NIC, the external SAS port connected from the backplane, etc. What was different from their listing is that the rack rails they *actually* included, are the more desirable "yellow" label rails that are full extension. Their picture shows a "blue" label rail that doesn't extend completely out. So, that's a bonus!

Nice! I didn't have time to dig in much as it was a half impulse purchase while at work. Sounds like it'll be a hoot

Sick, thanks! I hadn't had the time to start looking at the other bits I'd need. Any other time and effort you'd like to save me? :D

wow nice, if I had not just built a R710 not long ago for NAS duty, this would have been a much better option.

Thanks, that's a good thread. I snagged a quick 64gb the same day I bought the system. I will probably expand to 128gb at some point

those 2 2.5" bays are what i need for my cache drives.
Same seller just listed a similar system. If have a use for the mATX board/CPU or wouldn't mind flipping them, you may be interested: 2U Supermicro X10SLM+-F E3-1220v3 3.1GHz PC3-12800E 16GB LSI SAS 9211-8i 2x250GB | eBay

Also, (assuming home, non-enterprise setting) Velcro makes for a great 2.5" SSD mounting solution, just sayin'. Unless you have a board similar to the X9DRI-LN4F+ that occupies the extra space where the 2.5" bays would go. Then there isn't enough space for the SSD on it's side, unfortunately.

I saw that system and didn't want a 4/4 Xeon CPU as it's slower than what I'm using now as a backup solution. I'd have to gut a whole bunch of systems and cobble together too much stuff to make 2 useable systems.

That and I'm lazy, let's be honest.
