What cpu are you guys going to stick in this system? Is that 10 core viable?
any 2011 v1 and v2 is good. i have verified personally even the OEM cpu 2696 v2 12 cores which did not work on intel s2600cp does work on here. Haven't tried any qs/es v2 cpu but those are not common anyway.

Right now the 2680 v2 ($170) seems to be the most cost effective higher end bang for the buck with 2660 v2 ($110) the most cost effective lower end bang.

I have an overpriced 2690 v2 in mine currently right now ....lol...

I'm really tempted to pick this up to put in my SC836 chassis. Grab a cheap single Xeon 2660v2 or 2680v2 as a budget way of getting my NAS up and running. Cheap DDR3 memory.

Any reason this would cause an issue in an SC836?
As long as the mounting screws are all good. S30 MB uses all standard psu and fan plugs.

i notice there is a4 pin gpu power plug near the first pci e slot to provide extra juice to gpu. I think that plug is the same as a PSU 8/4 pin cpu plug. i don't think you need to use it unless you have a high power gpu card. or use quadro sli.

Google the MB size if you want to make sure but i know it's nothing big like EEB

Ok, I think the SC836 will even handle an EE-ATX, at least E-ATX. The S30 mobo is E-ATX from what I can tell. 12.3″ x 9.9″. So it should fit fine. I'd rather just get the motherboard. Don't have much use for the chassis.

How loud is the HSF or noise from these suckers?
You talking about the supermicro chassic or the S30 WS? I cant say anything about the supermicro server chassic but they are probably not silent at all like most servers

as far as S30 WS itself, it is almost unnoticeable. However i think their CPU fan is a little small and warmer and could use a little bit bigger heat sink and cpu fan but it's not a huge problem since i ran some stress test before and it didn't like shut off on me.

Even the D30 dual cpu WS are nearly silent unless you stress them but even then it's still very tolerable. the heatsink and cpu fans are on the smaller side. so they might get a little louder during stress but you can replace them with any 2011 solutions. i myself use a cheap $21 one that has bigger sink and fan and spins slower so even more silent as well as keeping it cooler. Your cooler size is limited by the plastic bracket overlying the PCIe cards which holds the cards in place instead of the usual screws. see the pics. on the D30 the primary cpu socket is very close to the bracket that you almost have to stick with the smaller default lenovo cooler. but you have more room for the 2nd cpu socket or the S30 cpu socket but it still somewhat limited by the socket position relative to the plastic bracket.

Just got mine in. This is gonna be a fun toy to mess with.
I 've been playing with mine for past 1.5 wk... came with the 256gb hdd and quadro k2000, upgraded to 2690 v2, 32gb ram.

Its a nice quiet WS.

Too bad a separate Socrates v2 MB I brought from another seller for $110 shipped was a dud...

Why would you get these used mobos\servers\cpus when you can get a brand new ryzen system for nearly the same price? You can get a ryzen 1700 cpu\mobo combo for under 250 at microcenter.

Because these come with a Case/Fans/PSU/Windows License. RAM is dirt cheap and you can still get a lot of power out of these V2 Xeon's

I guess if you can get a full system for 200 but some posts put up 100+ dollar motherboards. By the time you are done with setting that up with a decent v2 processor you are in the hole at least 250.

You have to know which is a good price to get.... some sellers have crazy price..
The main attraction of v2 is the ram price.... even though some v2 cpu is still good bargain. . But not as good bargain once the new ryzen get cheaper...

I'm at $190 for a 4 core Xeon CPU with 8GB RAM and a meh video card. For another $150 or so it looks like I can upgrade to a 10/20 core CPU and just drops in place. For another $100 I can probably get another 64GB of RAM.

$440 for a 10/20 core Xeon CPU, 72GB RAM and whisper quiet in a desktop case with USB 3.0.

Honestly I could probably replace my current desktop with this system and call it a day.

I have both the Lenovo S30 and a HP Z420 right now, both were picked up under the $200 mark (the HP was closer to $230 after shipping).
The S30 came with a 1620V2 and 32GB of ECC UDIMM. I sold the UDIMMS and put in RDIMMS since it supports it. The sale of the unbuffered ecc covered the cost of the machine! The HP came with a E5-2609 and 16GB of DDR3 ECC RDIMM's (they went in to the S30). I upgraded it with a E5-2667 V2 and 64GB of ECC RDIMM's

They are both pretty solid machines. The only issue I have had with the lenovo is one of the screw posts that the HSF goes into broke off the socket o_O. It runs fine as a backup plex server for me with no thermal issues, but I am not going to pull the HSF back off :p. It has a Socrates 2.0 board which has a proprietary front panel header that may be why people are having issues using the board. I ordered a board to replace the one with the broken socket and it ended up being a 1.0 board which is not compatible with the later chassis so it went back.

My main desktop right now is the Z420.
Z420 - $230
64GB Ram 4x16GB - $160
E5-2667 V2 - $300

Just under $700 for a fast 8-core machine. After you add in the cost of the case, power supply and extra cost for DDR4 the Ryzen 1700 ends up costing more, if you want 64GB of DDR4 that alone is about the cost of this machine!

There are some good deals to be had with these machines. Keep an eye on the Lenovo S30, HP Z420 and Dell T3610. Here is a T3610 (v2 cpu) for cheap: DELL Precision T3610 Intel Xeon E5-1607 3.00GHz 8GB 1TB Desktop Computer Pc | eBay

Could you check the BIOS date of your Z420? Mine is dated 2011 which I have read means that it doesn't support V2 processors and isn't capable of upgrading to support it. Picked it up off of Craigslist for $100, came with a E5-1620.

I will take a look when I get home. For $100 that is still a great deal.
