Is it possible to get these SAS Hitachi drives to work on a "normal" system?

I don't remember exactly, since I only spend an hour or so working with them. I did manage to get them into a ZFS array.

I've been meaning to revisit these drives, since I have ten of them, I just can't seem to find the time.

I started messing around with these again today, then I got busy. Here's sdparm output from one of these drives, and from a 600GB HGST C10K900 for comparison. I know they're not identical drives, but as close as I could get.

On the VSP drive, I already used sg_format to set fmtpinfo=0 and pfu=0, and I enabled WCE, since that's disabled by default. As noted by others, these already come with 512 format.

I didn't change anything on the C10K900.

Are you still working on this?
I've been trying to figure this out for a bit - the problem I'm seeing is that WRITE commands either take a LONG time to complete or abort with a 0B/81/00 error.
ABORTED COMMAND/VENDOR UNIQUE - not very helpful at all!

The drives I have are
SE_HGST, DKR5D-J600SS, F/W B8B8

Setting WCE = 1 helps the writes at least complete, but it takes around 2 seconds!
I'm very suspicious of an underlying firmware issue but would like to discuss this with you if you have some time.

Am just hoping to put these drives into "normal" use.

BTW I get the same behavior formAtted at 512 or 520 BPS.

I'm working to accomplish a similar win... and experiencing the same problems... I have a large number of HITACHI drives that I've pulled from a decommissioned HITACHI VSP... I've wiped/zero'd the drives within the HITACHI VSP environment... and would now like to use the drives outside of the HITACHI VSP... I'm not attempting (at this stage) to have the drives work in another proprietary NAS (NetApp or EMC, etc)... but I would like to use them to populate standard DELL r710/r810 servers and HP g7/g8 servers...

...I have changed the blocksize from 520 to 512 with...
# sg_format --format --size=512 --six -v /dev/sg1
...I was able to verify the result with...
# smartctl -x /dev/sg1

Drives are viewable in POST...
Also although viewable within Windows Disk Management, I cannot get the drives to initialize in Windows...
Also, I cannot get anything to write to drives outside of Wwindows. I have even tried using LSoft Killdisk to complete random binary overwrite but writing to the drive seems to disabled... been playing with various drive attributes but have yet to find a solution... anybody find a work-around yet?

HITACHI HUC106060CSS600, DKR5C-J60SS, F/W AUAU

I have free drives for any forum member that can solve this issue. thanks in advance :)

In fact I've already returned those Hitachi VSP 600GB drives as 2/3 were DOA (unconfigurated Bad), and I bought a dozen of SEAGATE DKS5C-J600SS (ST9600204SS) right after.
All drives can be detected and can be formatted into 512KB sector without problem, yet I wasn't able to write in a single digit / create any partition into those drives (both linux & windows platforms)
I read about Mike J's another post on the forum (How to reformat HDD & SSD to 512B Sector Size) and assumed the firmware of these SEAGATE drives is similar to what he mentioned.

Yes, as far as we've seen any DKS firmware drives have something in the firmware that breaks all WRITE CDBs.
I haven't been able to get any details from my contacts at Seagate or HDS.

Any progress on this? I have about 20x HGST drives that have been formatted from 520 to 512, but cannot write to them. I'm using 3x dell H310 cross-flashed to IT mode. I've tried:

There are a lot of netapp drives available for cheap.
For example these, excellent value. The question is, should I avoid Netapp/EMC SAS drives? Or is the chance to get them to work sg_format good?
My only experience is with these drives. I tried everything that I could, but ultimately had to return them. Lesson learned: when buying uniquely formatted drives, confirm someone with the same exact model number got them working in the forum.

I purchased a couple of sets of EMC drives and was able to format them to 512 and they worked fine. I think it's a crapshoot unless there are certain models or marking that identify the differences.

I think the only drives with this problem are from Hitachi VSP SANs.

I've got two from VSP and two from NetAPP and the NetAPP drives are on another firmware version which works fine.

Hey Guys, I just solved the problem !
i had the same problem with hitachi 900gb 10k, and seagate 900gb 10k, after reformat the sector size to 512, you should make 'logical volume' to make it detectable and writable !
you will have two choice at least
1-make the hdd raid 0 with it self (the controller will make logical volume')
2-use the linux command to make the 'logical volume' !
