Supermicro SC836BHA-R1K28B with rails for $282 on eBay (sorry, only one ;)).

That's the high-availability one with a 9K RPM fan wall (for even more noise!) and a bay and PDB for a 3rd PWS-1K28P-SQ power supply. Given that one of those power supplies is around $100 on eBay[advertising link], 2 plus a chassis for $282 seems like a steal. I guess more people want the expander backplane versions - there were only 2 other bidders on it.

I was one of those watching it but ultimately managed to curb my enthusiasm :)

I might have been able to get it for less - the seller originally listed it for $199, but wanted $177.28 for shipping. By the time I convinced them of a realistic shipping price, they re-listed it and it gathered more attention. The re-listed shipping was still wrong ($93.96) but I got the seller to agree to the actual shipping cost of $60-something.

Unfortunately, I needed the "B" chassis with the rear cutout for the optional 2.5" bays. I think all of the surplus Compellent boxes are the older revision without the cutout.
B-style chassis are harder to come by, the later model Compellent variant in theory could be converted to a B-style but then you need to add in the extra 50ish for the rear bay module. I also picked up a Quantum variant as well this time to compare the difference as those can sometimes be picked up for even less.

Got a Amazon email blast late yesterday afternoon.

Supermicro SuperServer Dual LGA2011 400W 1U Rackmount Server Barebone System, Black SYS-6017R-M7UF
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3A8NQA/ref=pe_2529240_253744300_em_1p_0_ti

For the cost of $205 + tax , Not really a killer deal for the server.

I ordered the server with prime shipping last night , this morning , Amazon shipped the server from FL using FEDEX oversight service.
I check out the retail price for FEDEX overnight rate for a 32LB package is $239.00.

Personally , I have never paid for 32LB package overnight costing $239 shipping.

I'll go you one better - I ordered this from Amazon. It is a 6' piece of 12-24 fully threaded rod (it is an odd size, not available at local home centers, hardware stores, etc.) for $10.79 w/ free Prime 2-day shipping. Amazon waited until the night before it was due to ship it, FedEx overnight, in a 10" x 10" x 96" carton.

I just checked, and FedEx Standard Overnight for that box is $314.40. For a $10 part.

I'm sure Amazon gets a big discount, but still...

It is not really about shipping cost.

I am thinking about the possibility is boundless , whether it is hardware or real life.
