Hello
We needed quite a few of these, and ordered a few weeks ago from them. I thought it was good of a deal but not a great deal, or I would have posted here. We needed them, so had to buy from where ever we could.

The seller is top notch. I have ordered from him quite a few times, and never had any problems.

Wow, those have gone down in price! I remember them going for $40-70 earlier in the year.

How does the idle power of an L5640 compare to other CPUs in the series? I have an E5620 I've been debating about upgrading, though I'm not sure whether to go for L5640 (since it mostly sits idle), or one of the X56xx, since I do care somewhat about non-idle performance.

Will know in a few days, moving from E5645 to an L5640. The E5620 is the same clock and TDP as the 5645 just with two less cores.

Check this old review, which touched on the 6-core X5670:

Intel Xeon X5670 Dual 6 Core Processor Benchmarks and Review

Looks like the idle is a bit higher with the X56xx series, but not that much (only 16W for two processors). It appears that the biggest difference comes when they are stressed; the X5670 in the review can ramp up way higher in terms of power consumption.

In for 2. Thanks. Gonna replace a couple of X5570's.

I have dual L5630 right now, goal is low power for a 24/7 NAS, I would not mind extra power on tap for Plex transcoding.
Does anybody think that my idle wattage would go up much replacing with the L5640?

As a percentage not much at all.
Though the thoughts of using the older stuff 24x7 and expecting low power consumption seems not the best combination, then again if 12+ 3.5" disks that's also a big power suck.

Looks like various sellers have L5630 quads as well for as low as $4/CPU. Maybe I'll replace the last of my 5520's.... I didn't realize E5-2630L's were down to $25-30 either....

I was running a single L5630 and recently upgraded it to an L5640. The overall power usage only went up about 5W at idle and the extra two cores make Plex much happier. I dropped from dual to single CPU a while back for my NAS, and even with ZFS and Plex running, it is quite efficient.

single E5645 to single L5640 idle power drop is about 4-5w, under load there's a bigger diff but it still works just fine for ZFS/Plex setup.

Wow, only 4-5w I would have thought more.

At 100% usage appears to be around 20w, not a ton but big deal if you have 10+ in use ;) that's for sure!

Haven't tried the nehalem chips but guessing that's when the idle efficiency changes came across. Tried something similar a few years ago going from a 5160 to an e5320 with an idle drop of over 20w. There still are gains with the newer chips, just less of it.
