I would say that the E5 V1/V2 cycles have been accurate. I'll wait and see how V3 and V4 cycles pan out according to the prediction but it wouldn't be too far off in terms of calendar months or a timeframe.
But I hate the wait...lol.... i already got 1 e5-2686 v3 cpu for a great price of $450. and also already got a MB and 32GB ddr4. don't know if i can wait for another year ;)....

But i can definitely wait a few more months for lower price on v2 cpu.... Looks like the going price on ebay for e5-2670 v1 is around 85-90$ so i would sell the current cpu and it would cost me 220$ for each e5-2696v2 cpu so definitely save a little...


I'm hoping to pick up some 10 or 12 core E5 v2's early next year to replace my 2670v1's.
i think the e5-2696 v2 will probably be the best v2 12 core bargain? i just dont see the top of the line 2697 v2 ever get lower than the 96. seems kind of counter intuitive since 2696 v2 is OEM so less number made? i don't know. maybe that trend will reverse once you have a lot of decomissioned servers?

Not worth the premium I paid over my $80 2670.
This xeon core thing never really scale up linearly ...lol

x5650 6 cores 2.66ghz : $15

e5-2670 8 cores 2.6ghz: $80-90

e5-2696 v2 12 cores 2.5ghz: $300-320

e5-2675 v3 16 cores 1.8ghz: $400

e5-2686 v3 18 cores 2.0ghz: $590

Looking at the above numbers, x5650 is quite a bargain isn't it? That chip is still holding its own in a lot of build and overclocked...

For example the base speed when using all cores on 2696 v2 should be 2.9Ghz? It only drops down to 2.5Ghz when doing heavy computation with AVX.
My point was that you pay in exponential increase in price to get more cores per cpu. I think that is also true when considering total power (which equals # of cores * max frequency using all cores)..

From Wikipedia, should be +6x from 2.5GHz base (3.1GHz) which is a tiny bit better than the 2670v1 with 50% more cores.

Won't the price of Eypc cpu's, and Threadripper to a smaller degree, affect the resale of the high end used V3 and V4's ?

I feel that for used cpus, supply affects price far more than demand. I.E. if there's a ton of CPUs being sold, the price can get very low even if the price / performance ratio of new CPUs is far worse. Equally, if there's very low supply of used CPUs, the price tends to stay right around the level of that CPU new -- even if equally priced new CPUs (newer generation) are far superior.

Down to just 310! Intel Xeon E5-2696v2 2.5GHz 12-Core SR19G Processor CPU | eBay

I guess with BO, you can get them for under 300 too.
Just got 2 of these with BO for 580$ or $290 each from this seller. See if anyone else can go lower.


Also,

e5-2696 v2 12 cores 2.5ghz: $300-320

e5-2675 v3 16 cores 1.8ghz: $400

e5-2696 v2 total computational power at base clock is faster than e5-2675 v3 (12 x 2.5 = 30, 16 x 1.8 = 28.8). e5-2675 v3 turbo up to 2.3 while e5-2696 v2 turbo up to 3.3 so e5-2696 v2 at turbo is even faster. add to that the cheaper ddr3 for v2 cpu. So there is really no comparison between e5-2675 v3 and e5-2696 v2. Hope i didnt make any wrong assumption....

Was about to say, looking at those turbo bin numbers, there is like no real advantage to buying 2697 v2 over 2696 v2 since as soon as you put a workload onto the cpu, the turbo bin would kick in anyway making the base clock moot. but i guess that is just all on paper or according to wikipedia?

More TPD is what I am seeing. That could allow you to say at the higher turbo for longer.

So who has got this cpu from ebay recently and especially from seller cuba4sale? i plugged mine into a s2600cp and a lenovo D30. both of them don't even boot into bios. they turn on but that's it...wasted whole evening so far ;(

i tried one cpu and try two. no go. latest bios on both systems. i think i got two bad cpu... anyone can tell me anything else i can try?
