I was wondering if omnios has also changed the way it uses memory when going from r151018 - > r151022?

I've been running r151018 under esxi v6u2 (all in one with passtrough VM with 6GB RAM for years with good performance)
Memory usage would always be going up and down depending on what the system was doing (from 500M to 4-5GB usage).

I've upgraded from r151018 - > r151020-> r151022 and also reinstalled my server from ESXi v6 to 6.5 u1

Now esxi complains that my vm is using the 6 GB constantly..:

These are the numbers I see from within omnios:
echo ::memstat | mdb -k

I suppose this is more a display problem/bug in former ESXi.
When you enable pass-through, den RAM assignment is always fixed. This is the case with current ESXi and was the case with former ESXi releases.

Hi Gea,
Yes I guess you are right, did not notice this in 6.0u2
In 6.5u1 with vcsa appliance the checkmark "Reserve all guest memory (All locked)" is unchecked so could very well be a bug.
VMware and we will have to suffer through this till they get it 100% right with the html5 client..
I still hate the way that they've changed the network view which was perfect in the csharp client and now with the html5 client it's not visually clear what is connect to what.

Ahh well the story with omnios and openindiana is not much better why can't developers just get along :)

Its not too easy with two communities.
Debian and Ubuntu are similar projects but with a much larger user and developper base. No problem for them with two nearly identical approaches.

OpenIndiana and OmniOS are also very similar projects. While OI have a much wider approach with a desktop and server minimal edition based on ongoing newest Illumos, OmniOS has a strong target on stability with a striped down Illumos distribution that is as small as possible - just enough OS for ZFS storage based on a fork or current Illumos with add-ons like LX.

I really hope for a closer interaction between. The only option I can think of is a switch of OpenIndiana to the OmniOS fork of Illumos with the LX addition instead of pure Illumos. If this is not an option, two independent projects seems now unavoidable as it was with OmniOS @OmniTi.

Hi Gea,

Just had a new installation of Omnios 15022.
Followed the steps on the OS setup pdf to upgrade it from 15022 to CE edition 15022i,
however, that seems to have a bit of problem as pkg complained that the new BE Omnios-1 can not be activated.

Tried to manually activated it, but still:

root@napp-it:~# beadm activate omnios-1
Unable to activate omnios-1.
Error installing boot files.

Will this be the problem from I installed it on a USB stick?

Hi,

Tried the OI-hipster-minimal-20170502 with Napp-it.
However, upon importing a zpool, it complaint about unable to do NFS share.
Checked NFS service and it says NFS is invalid protocol.

Is there any additional packages need to be installed for the minimal texted based installation of OpenIndiana?

Anyone using Oracle Solaris 11 for personal use? Is it free for personal use? Was going to try out OpenIndiana as well. Still trying to decide if I'm going to run VM's on it (mainly Plex and a couple lightly used vms) or just keep it as a NAS/SAN and vms on current machine. I am interested in using napp-it as I definitely want an easy GUI to manage it. I've tried FreeNas a few times and always had issues, so I won't be going that way again.

No, not really. You can get a "otn" license for non production enviroments. You can do developing, demonstrating, prototyping & testing applications on solaris for free, but using it permanently for storage (zfs) would breach the license.
(Not relevant for homelabs, but in enterprises this could end very ugly and expensive)
