@BlackArchon yes it can help, for instance 1620 and 1630 v3's show as not overclockable under XTU hardware results. It's okay if someone has benched with XTU but still a few CPU's not listed such as the evasive 14 core 1691 v3.

@Patriot could be the board holding your CPU back, what does HWiNFO show for ratio overclocking under the CPU properties and/or what does CPU-Z text dump show, especially MSR 0x00000194?

I have tried overclocking my W3690 in my X8SAX by adjusting the multiplier alone but it does not go above the stock frequency. Either they are not truly unlocked or it is only available on particular motherboards, so we might want to start listing known good combinations for everything.

1366 Xeons are completely different from anything newer. Only the top end i7 models had unlocked multipliers on 1366. All other CPUs were overclocked via BCLK increase. Back then other high speed buses like PCIe were not tied to it, so you could go very high (very bad idea to change it on anything more modern).

So you agree it should be taken out of the list in the OP (along with the 3680)? :)

Hmm, further research says that that one should be an analogue of an i7 990X, and therefore overclockable (as is the case with newer ones). Wonder why you're having issues.

Not sure, I created another thread to keep from cluttering this one up, but I will still leave my suggestion of known working CPU/mobo combos if possible :)
Overclocking a W3690 on X8SAX

Multiplier-unlocked Xeons according to overclocking results from HWBOT:
Sandy Bridge-EP:
E5-1620
Attention !!!!!!
HWBOT shows a CPU-Z screenshot with the world record of a E5-1620 (sandy-bridge) of 5296 Mhz.
It is made with BCLK of 132.41 mhz, means the 1620 is NOT unlocked.
(edit) now tested: 1620 is unlocked !
Same on the E5-1620 v2 (ivy bridge) BLK=113.97 x 37 = 4216.99Mhz, NOT unlocked........

The fact that you haven't seen a E5-1620 with a higher multiplier than its base value doesn't prove it is locked. However, it's a clue. I will add a remark to the E5-1620 and the E5-1620 v2 on the list.

W3690 is also multiplier unlocked. Can confirm as I had the W3690 and using an ASUS X58 motherboard was able to overclock it to 4.0Ghz using multiplier adjustments only.

That said, the only overclock results I have with the w3690 were buss overclocks... which suggests I got better performance that way. At the time I got my hands on these... I was already running dual 2680s soooo no cpu-z screenshots of 4.4ghz that I appear to have handy. It is most definitely your board. I will have to pull this chip and swap it to another couple of boards and see if the 1680v3 will open up.

Thank you for your efforts! I added this to the thread start. :)

Looking for a little help....

the old 3820 was tired... i found this thread and bought a e5-1620 to test out in my motherboard before taking the 6/8 core plunge...

Msi x79a GD45 (8D)
e5-1620 V1

problem is it show chip as unlocked but i am unable to get it to allow a greater multiplier than 43!!!

max reported is 57 in cpu-z and 63 in bios

bios allows 44 but always pushes it back to 43

on latest bios any advice greatly appreciated as currently gutted wanted to check this ran then had my eyes on a e5-1680 v2 as ive a phobya 400mm rad....

1620 is partly unlocked, max multi is x43 - same than the 3820
