I am considering picking up one of the TPlink T1700G-28TQ switches to pair with my XS708T since the TPlink is fanless. Just wondering if anyone has anymore feed back on the TPlink?

I grabbed a t1700-28tq from amazon uk a few weeks back. Was real chuffed with it but now seem to have vlan over lag/lacp issues. Not 100% sure it's the switch at the moment, could be me :)

nice price point. but the benefits of that design seems very limited. it has no managed features and presumably is designed for a NAS device on one of the 10G ports while other "NAS-clients" are on the 1G ports. In effect, the "clients" would still be limited by the 1G ports. In an environment where you only have 8x 1G ports, I think the chances are low that you have 8x "clients" simultaneously saturating their link to the 10G port.

supporting LACP would help it to be a bit more useful i think... at least you could create a 8x port LAG to another switch or something.

I could see it, one NAS and one workstation/server on 10g and everything else on 1g work be perfect for a lot of ppl

Vlan over lag issues sorted. It's a web gui issue, works fine from cli.

So I'm looking to get a new switch and I'm torn between two swtiches.

I'm leaning toward the Trendnet teg-30284 simply because it has 4x SFP+ ports, but I can live with the 2 SFP+ on the Mikrotik CRS226-24G-2S+RM if it's much more feature rich.

Other things like their power consumption, features, and routing options would matter too.

What's everyone's opinion?

Mikrotik $269 VIA Amazon
Trendnet $339 VIA Amazon

A note about the Mikrotik...it is extremely feature rich, but it only has a 400MHz processor; fairly anemic if you want to use any features beyond simple switching. See this thread regarding terrible routing performance. CRS226-24G-2S+ Poor routing performance - MikroTik RouterOS

It also apparently doesn't fully support 802.3ad. from the mikrotik forums:
Hello,

CRS226-24G-2S+RM does not support 802.3ad by the switch-chip (without CPU).
In switch-chip it supports Port Trunking which is a static link aggregation
similar to HP Port Trunking.

Regards,
Janis B.

I would go with the Trendnet for pure switching (and 4 10G ports instead of 2!), and something else to route.

Well I ended up purchasing the TrendNet TEG-30284 for a couple of reasons. First was it was only 25 watts maximum, and second because the switching capacity was higher in both throughput (128Gbs vs 88Gbs) and pps (96Mpps vs 65Mpps)

For routing I'll end up using a physical PFSense box, but I'll have to decide on a Opteron 4332HE or a Rangeley 2758 for processing.

Has anyone tried the TrendNet TEG-30284 with various DAC cables and optics to see if they're doing any vendor locking? considering picking one up as the payback in power over my HP 2900 using CX4 is roughly a year. (25w vs 200w)

Right now I have the Trendnet hooked up to 2 servers fine using the hardware below:

Switch: TrendNet TEG-30284
Cables: Cisco SFP-H10GB-CU1M
Cards: QLogic QLE8152 Dual 10GB CNA

Ordered a 3M Cisco cable too to for a longer run.

Update:
Tested a Alcatel-Lucent 10M SFP+ DAC cable too successfully. I'll try and get a model of the cable.

10/30/2016 - Due to negatives mentioned about the ES-16-XG, I opted to order the TrendNet TEG-30824 @ $305 shipped.
10/31/2016 - Received B&H Photo email stating the ES-16-XG EdgeSwitch was in stock @ $599. (someone's laughing at me)
11/01/2016 - ES-16-XG @ B&H Out of stock / Coming soon. (Wow!! You guys are fast)
11/01/2016 - Arrived home to find TrendNet TEG-30824 switch was here. (Wow!! those guys are fast)

Excited but tired, I won't do much with it until the weekend or the weekend after ...
I just plugged it in to test sound level and DAC.

A little loud for my taste .. enough to make me take inventory of my 40mm Noctua fans.
A completely wrong sound measure:
- About 1 foot away but unit is pivoted 90 degrees so the sound meter is closest to the intake
side of the switch (left side if you are facing ports)
- 61dba on power up ... 51dba once settled/idle and it's the loudest thing in my lab rack (4 hosts with cpu fan).
- 38dba is what I measure my lab rack with when the switch is powered off.

That fan-less TPlink is sounding pretty damn good right about now!!

DAC:
- Mellanox Technologies p/n MC3309130-00A (x 4 hosts with ConnectX 3 dual port NICs)
- No issues with registering at 10Gbe .. no time to really log in and test right now.
