Prices on Ebay vary widely, how some retailers charge US$800 (no RAID6/60 key) for a M5015 is beyond me, where as they go down to as little as US$250 often with BBU still attached.

I hope to get a M5000 key today, I could get one as low as NZ$50 (~US$40) if all goes well with the auction, I've seen them as low as US$150 on ebay so this should be a bargain.
Then I may also get a M1015 on Sunday also for NZ$50 if all goes well with that auction, not as big a bargain as the key but still good, and right under my nose.
Does all depend on how many folk in NZ know of the M1015 capabilities and how under rated they are.

Great info Tyrant82! Good luck mobilenvidia! I wonder if I could buy a bunch of licenses at a discount then parse out.

I'm wondering if the M5000 and M1000 Advance Feature keys are actually the same, they basically do the same thing unlock the BIOS RAID features.
Not having seen a key I wonder if they contain circuitry for the BIOS to read.

I hope to test this if all goes well, not heard from my M5000 key owner yet to pay for it and it being sent.
I've got a M5015 with BBU coming from Ebay, and possibly may still get the M1015 also on Sunday, no other bidders.

IBM were big on RAID 5E with their older SCSI RAID controllers, this was similar RAID 6 but with hot spare.
I was running this on my ServeRAID 7k system.
But 5E I take Adaptec has the rights to.

Thought I'd add details for an IBM/Lenovo MR10i

MR10i = LSI SAS8708E (Can't find exact model on the LSI site)

LSI 1078e controller, x8 PCI-E, eight internal SAS/SATA II 3 Gb/s ports, RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, 50, 6, 60, 256 MB cache, optional BBU.

IBM Redbook Site
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/tips0054.html#mr10i

Compatible LSI Card Page
http://www.lsi.com/support/products/Pages/MegaRAID SAS 8708EM2.aspx

MegaRAID Firmware-(MegaRAID Release 3.6) for: 8704ELP, 8704EM2, 8708ELP, 8708EM2, 8880EM2, 8888ELP (I've personally tested this)
http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public...2 _SAS_FW_Image_APP-1.40.282-1279_Update1.zip

Notes
  • They don't like the PCI-E ports running with 256b payload causes NMI problems in Linux.
  • The chipset gets EXTREMELY hot so a good airflow is recommended (I personally use 3 of these with a 120mm fan over the PCI expansion slots)

Hope this info helps.

Um the IBM M1015 would need the M1000 raid key to unlock its raid 5 functionality , it does the encryption as well.
the M1015 raid key also looks the same as one of the units for the Supermicro 2008 and connects via a two pin header

What I don't know is if you can stick the raid enabler from one on a card of a different manufacturer the device has a 2 pin header with what looks like a six pin serial eprom.

My M5000 Adv feature key has LSI naming on it, with a IBM sticker for their part number
Bloody thing is so small hard to read anything on it.

I've got a M1015 and a M5015 coming, I'll test the M5000 key in both to see what it does.
But I have a feeling the tiny 6pin chip on the key is an EPROM that loads to the SAS controller upon boot.

Wouldnt happen to have a AOC, or Supermicro version of that key would you I'd be interested to see if that works, also if you update the firmware on the 1015 will the raid 5 enable still work.

I'll give the M1015 ago with the M5000 key, not sure if this will unlock the RAID 5/50 and SED features.

I alas don't have a AOC or Supermicro version, I do have broken Dell Perc H200, this does not have a standard 2 pin key header.
It does have a header in a socket with 2 pins the key doesn't fit though.

The M1015 should be here next week, the M5015 hopefully this week.
Now I need a Mobo with more than 3 PCIe slots to fit the cards and UEFI BIOS to run them

That would be interesting to see if the AOC versions worked, but I could imagine that there is something firmware specific that will prevent it from being successful.

I vote you spend $50 for the good of the many to find out :)

Really need to see the back of the key to find out more.
There is some tiny text, too small to read without assistance.
