You can also boost an HP z420 to 256GB with an e5-26xx v0 series processor with these. :)

If the z420 is like the z620 then you need the 2nd revision motherboard to support larger than 16gb dimms. Or a bios programmer.

I believe mine is a v1 motherboard and it hit 256GB no problem. My cpu is a e5-2630l v1.

You can check boot block version by going to the BIOS, File->System Information and checking "Boot Block Date". 2011 means you can currently only use Sandy Bridge Xeons and 2013 means you can use Sandy or Ivy Bridge.

I had two z620s and the exact same 32gb dimms worked in the one with the newer boot block but wouldn’t work in the one with the older boot block.

Perhaps I drew the wrong conclusion from the experience or perhaps it doesn’t apply to the z420.

I also had a z420 and I was able to run 192gb of ram there without problems. I never bothered to check the boot block date on it…

Yep, I remember all this back in the day when I was researching why it worked since the z420 was supposed to only support ecc udimms. And I distinctly remember I had the 'older' motherboard, but as the years have worn on, my memory isn't what it once was. For some reason I didn't have this in my notes, but I guess that's because it's all online somewhere in a thread or two where I posted all the details.
