Like any other mobile CPU these days, it's BGA.

It's just the compute unit. Chassis is seperate. If you have the space a cooler master case would be my suggestion as it allows for better airflow but they are expensive if you can't find used.
Eeeeee. So in other words, potentially 150 dollar box which requires a 400 dollar chassis to function.

Depending on your needs and wants I purchased a full nuc compute unit/case for less than 2.. Was an I5 I believe.. But for sustained loads I'd consider the coolermaster. Amazon warehouse deals always have them for 130ish..

I could be wrong but I believe this is powered with a 4+4 pin cable.

The coolmaster nc100 has nothing special. The only think I noted was a 10 pin power cable but the compute unit has a 8 pin visible.

The benefit of buying the special chassis would be for use of the additional pcie lanes to run a full GPU or other pcie devices in my opinion.

Yes.

I'm not sure exactly how the pcie interface communicates with the other pcie slots but it seems reasonable to think there might be a pcie switch on that board that makes it work.

Maybe that's why there appears to be power for the board.

edit: looks like there a m.2 slot on there too.

If I understand correctly, the PCIe connector on the CPU board was used to connect a PCIe card in the original enclosure. In theory, it should be possible to use 2 Occulink->PCIe adapters connected back to back to hook up an extra PCIe device. If the BIOS supports bifurcation, maybe a 4 x Occulink- > 16x PCIe adapter could be used to split the bus into multiple cards (if control and clock signals are connected)?

It was $150 but blew up in price due to coverage from a few YouTubers.

Wonder if it can be powered with a PCIE riser typically used for mining and a compact 3D printed case. Or with the PCIE baseboard.
Link to said YouTube videos?

i suppose a row of these in a cheap gpu mining case would be a nice compact cluster.

He mentions der8auer's video, and even credits him with helping with troubleshooting

Do these need to be inserted into a PCIe slot or can they run strictly off EPS power? I have plenty of open chassis slots but no available PCIe slots.

I believe the lower tdp celeron models need the pcie slots for power, not the higher tdp models.

By the original video it needs the 3.3v and 5v from pcie slot.
Would not boot for him when he had one of them taped.
