I've worked with a good bit of fiber, but never CWDM nor 100g stuff yet (until now)-

Assuming that the QSFP28 modules ARE compatible with both of my switches (i know thats not always the case, but lets just assume yes here).

should connecting 2x of these optics together with a patch cable be a problem? (using a 150ft LC to LC SMF patch cable, connected directly):

QSFP28 100Gb QSFP+ 1310nm 2km SMF Transceiver Module KAIAM XQX5100 100G-CWDM4-RT

(ie is there a specific TX model number and a specific RX model number - or anything thing like that maybe?)

(im seeing these on ebay for ~ $30 or less!)

the only thing throwing me off is the CWDM part, as i will not be making use of cwdm here in the traditional sense. (ie will just be a patch cable between the 2x qsfp modules, no mux / demux boxes ect.)

thanks

nb; Perhaps the reason these are selling for so cheap on ebay is there is a thread where some have pointed out there are thermal issues (Or at least they run hotter than other 100g optics);

As far as i understand, mux/demux is done internally in the QSFP28 modules.
I run KAIAM XQX4302 in my mikrotik CRS504 switch and in my esxi hosts via Mellanox CX455A nics and OS2 LC fiber patch cables (5m each) and the modules keep temps around 50-55°C (i think their max limit is around 70°C).
I have this setup running for more than a year and it is rock stable :)

Great thanks, This was my assumption also.

will update w full equpiment specs / Compatibility when done in next few weeks

not sure if its A compatibility issue (switch is a netgear m4500-48XF8C on the latest FW v7.0.3.12 ) or if the qsfp modules are faulty, but im not getting a link between 2x KAIAM XQX5100 100GBase-CWDM4. More importantly the switch is showing local fault on one and local / remote fault on the other.

(ebay listing i bought from - Note the seller does have 5X users who left feedback saying Transceiver worked / all went well - That's not to say I didn't receive a bad pair):

It should be noted currently I'm plugging these both into the same switch (works fine for a 100g DAC in the same switch / setup, stp just marks one port as blocking once a link is successfully established).

Later today I have some 100G PCIE cards coming in as well as a pair of Intel QSFP28 transceivers so we'll test between that also. if anyone has an input please reply.

a 4ft SMF OS2 LC duplex patch cable is linking the 2x Transceivers (within the same switch).

I have tried:
- turning off auto negotiation, locking both to 100G or 40G, as well as turning on FEC CL91 (Forward error correction for 100g)
- tried a different patch cables between the two (they are duplex LC).
- tried a multi mode OM4 patch cable (instead of the SMF patch) just in case I needed to attenuate the signal since its such a short run for optics rated for max of 2KM (this did bring the signal down by about 2db as I wanted- however all result in the same issue).

> multi mode OM4 patch cable ??? CWDM4 is single mode (SMF), OS2 cable...

i know that- You may have misread I used SMF patch cables (the MM patch was just a 2nd test incase signal needed to be attenuated ie lowered power, which it did bring the signal down about 3db as i wanted, but still same issue.) since this is all on the same switch the link length is about 4 feet total (for now).
I probably shouldn't have even mentioned the multi-mode patch cable test as it may have confused the issue (so disrguard it please). thanks

(i edited my original post to make this more clear)
